Clarkson Has Own Block Party in Four-Set Win Over RIT

Rochester, NY – An impressive display of blocking up front was only surpassed by an even greater run from the service line for the Clarkson University Volleyball team as the Golden Knights recovered from a first set defeat to claim a 3-1 win (23-25, 25-16, 25-15, 25-10) over RIT in Liberty League action Friday evening.

The Golden Knights improved to 10-6 overall and remained unbeaten in the Liberty League at 4-0, while RIT dropped to 11-9 and 1-2 in conference matches. Clarkson will be back in action on Saturday afternoon, hosting Ithaca College with a chance to clinch a Liberty League playoff spot.

It didn't appear as if Clarkson would be in a position to be claiming a playoff spot this early in the season after a disappointing first set. The Golden Knights trailed by four early to RIT as the Tigers were getting a solid performance on offense. However, RIT saw a five-point advantage disappear with six attack errors (three forced on blocks) and two aces by the Golden Knights. RIT briefly regained the lead, but Clarkson again countered and took a two-point advantage following a Rachael Aird kills to make it 23-21. That was the last point the Knights would get, however, as RIT scored two more kills and picked up two more points on miscues by Clarkson.

While Clarkson was still trying to sort out its offense, the Knights took advantage of big performances from the blockers up front. RIT struggled mightily in the second set, with 11 errors and just eight kills, allowing Clarkson to make small leads into greater gaps. Up by just two (17-15), the Knights surrounded three RIT errors with two kills and an ace to gain a 23-15 margin and from there they cruised to a nine-point lead.

Frustrated from being denied at the net so frequently by the Clarkson block, RIT had just as much trouble on serve receive, where Meghan Edmund and Jillian Saenz each took advantage. In set number three, Edmund rattled off five straight points at the start to give Clarkson a 6-0 lead, and RIT would never challenge the Knights for the rest of the set. It was worse for the Tigers in the fourth game, as Jillian Saenz staked Clarkson to a 4-0 lead and Rachel Reusch helped the Knights streak out longer to a 12-2 edge. By that point, Clarkson's offense was churning out kills, having battered RIT for a 15-2-36 run (.361 hitting percentage) in the third and an 8-0-22 line (.364 hitting percentage) in the fourth game. The Tigers couldn't keep up and struggled to get to double digits in the fourth and final game.

Clarkson received contributions from all over the court on Friday, buoyed by Rachael Aird's 11-0-21 hitting line and eight block assists. Savannah Peters also struck for 11 kills and five block assists, and Rachel Reusch had eight kills and seven total blocks (three solo, four assists). Jillian Saenz was vicious from the service line with eight aces to go along with her 37 assists. Meghan Edmund also added three aces and 11 digs, while Kate Isaksen chipped in a match-high 27 digs. Kendall Cheval also produced 15 digs for the Knights. Overall, Clarkson had 15 total blocks (four solo, 22 assists) and 14 aces against just five service errors.

For RIT, freshman Taylor Higgins had 18 kills, including eight in the first set, but also committed 13 errors in 62 swings. Erin Parkinson had 33 assists and 13 digs, while Rebecca Bennett led the team with 15 digs.
