A second half comeback fell short as the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team was defeated by Vassar 3-1 on Friday afternoon.

Clarkson is now 4-5-0 this season with a 0-2-0 Liberty League record while Vassar improves to 3-5-1 overall and 2-0-0 in conference.

After a scoreless first half, the Brewers took the lead with two goals within a minute of each other. At 61:08, a Clarkson foul gave Vassar a penalty kick opportunity and Rebecca Andrews was able to convert to open the scoring. Just 50 seconds later, Vassar doubled its lead when Audrey Pillsbury scored off a pass from Savannah Cutler.

Clarkson's comeback attempt started in earnest in the 71th minute. After a Vassar foul, Lauren Flynn took the ensuing free kick and her shot got over the Vassar wall and beat the Brewers' goalkeeper to cut the lead in half. It was the eighth goal of the season for Flynn, a new career high for the senior and the highest Clarkson total since Shannon McCain scored nine in 1994.

With both teams pushing forward for the vital next goal, it was Vassar who was able to convert first. Cutler added her second assist of the game when she found Gabrielle Deitch who was able to score an insurance goal for the Brewers.

Vassar held a 17-8 advantage in shots and a narrow 3-2 lead in corner kicks. Elyse Green made three saves in goal for Clarkson while Stephanie Tapolsky had five stops for Vassar.

Clarkson will stay on the road with a game at Bard tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 pm.
