Clarkson Women's Lacrosse Falls To Defending Champions

Potsdam, NY – A stretch of eight straight goals in 15 minutes spanning the end of the first half and rolling into the start of the second half proved to be the difference for Cortland State as the Red Dragons downed the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team 15-5 in non-league action at Maxcy Field on the campus of SUNY Potsdam.

Steady defense in the early going allowed Clarkson and Cortland to remain even in the first five-plus minutes, but the Red Dragons broke through at the 24:05 mark of the first half on a goal from Kristen Ohberg. That was enough to get Cortland going as just 90 seconds later the Red Dragons tallied a second time and put two more in the back of the net for a 4-0 lead by the 21:22 mark. Clarkson responded with a pair of goals of its own from Kate Dillon and Christine Wright midway through the half to get back within two, but Cortland rattled off four more goals in the final 10 minutes to take an 8-2 lead into the locker room.

Cortland's second half scoring didn't take as long to get going as it did in the first half, with the Red Dragons producing four more goals in just four-plus minutes to keep the clock running with a double-digit lead. Monaghan scored a free-position shot at 25:51 to keep the clock rolling along and then scored four minutes later to give Cortland its biggest lead of the game. That was something that the Red Dragons would match on two other occasions in the half, but a pair of goals from Taylor Collins and one more from Ashley Flick kept the Knights close to stopping the time.

Cortland held a 38-17 edge in shots and forced the Knights into 17 turnovers while keeping Clarkson at nearly a .500 rate on clears (9-for-16).

Monaghan finished with five goals and an assist for a game-high six points to lead the Red Dragons, while Ohberg produced two goals and an assist for three points. Both Nicole Bello and Hannah Elmer each recorded three points on a goal and two assists, and Ashley Gentile also scored a pair of goals.

For Clarkson, Collins scored twice and Wright tallied one goal and one assist. Both Flick and Kate Dillon also scored one goal apiece.

Samantha Gladd recorded 11 saves in the Clarkson net before being relieved by Carrie Yurkon, who made three stops. For Cortland, Jacklyn Beshlian made six saves and Victoria Fusco denied one shot in relief for the Dragons.
