Clarkson Lacrosse Struggles Late in Loss at SUNY Potsdam

A four-goal lead after three quarters was not enough for the Clarkson University Lacrosse team against SUNY Potsdam on Wednesday night as the Bears outscored the Golden Knights 6-0 over the final 15 minutes to pull out an 11-9 victory on their home field.

Clarkson lost its third straight to see its record drop to 2-6 overall. The Green and Gold host Union on Saturday in Liberty League action at Hantz Turf Field beginning at 12:00 noon.

Clarkson controlled play for much of the first 45 minutes against Potsdam (6-1) to hold a 9-5 lead entering the fourth quarter. The Bears, however, ran off six straight goals in the final frame to snap an eight-game losing streak to the Knights. Potsdam took its only lead in the contest on a man-up goal for the game-winner with 5:11 remaining. The Bears sealed the victory, scoring into an empty net with two seconds left.

The Knights led 3-1 after the first quarter and held a 5-4 advantage at the half. The Knights outscored Potsdam 4-1 in the third quarter to hold a seemingly comfortable four-goal lead.

Juniors Scott Dosser and Ryan DaRin and sophomore Sam Groves each scored two goals for Clarkson. Senior J.R. Campbell recorded a team-high four points, all assists.

Pat Bonafede and Brian Martin led Potsdam with three goals and four points apiece.

The Bears held a 37-35 margin in shots, while the Green and Gold had a 32-31 edge in ground balls.

Junior Nick Strandholm made eight saves in the Clarkson goal.

Junior Marc Simmons won 10-of-13 faceoffs and picked up four ground balls.
