Loggins Records Double-Double in 72-54 CU Women's Hoops Win Over RPI

Potsdam, NY – Senior Ashley Loggins scored 17 points, grabbed 16 rebounds and made six steals as the Clarkson University Women's Basketball improved its winning streak to 11 straight games with a 72-54 victory over Rensselaer on Friday night at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights moved to 16-4 overall and 9-2 in conference games with the victory, tying for the second longest winning streak in school history. Rensselaer fell to 5-14 overall and 1-9 in conference games. Clarkson will take on Union College on Saturday afternoon.

The first half was full of mini-runs for both teams as neither ever had more than a six-point advantage. Clarkson scored the first four points, but the Engineers responded with a 10-0 run in a 3:44 span. That margin slowly evaporated as Clarkson came back to tie the score at 16-16 on a pair of free throws from Alyssia Marsal. With the score tied at 18, Clarkson went on an 8-2 run to take a six-point lead of its own, but the Engineers tied things back up at 28 with an 8-2 run of their own. With Rensselaer looking to tie the score once again in the final minute, Raeanna Dunn picked up a loose ball at the top of the key and went the other way for a two-on-one, which was finished for Marsal to give Clarkson a 32-28 edge at the break.  Marsal had eight points to lead the Knights, while Colleen Daley produced four points, seven rebounds and a block in nine minutes off the bench. For Rensselaer, Sam Krumbhaar had 10 points and Shaina Iton produced eight points, five boards, two steals and a block. Neither team shot particularly well from the floor, but both made up for that deficit with solid production from the free throw line, with the Engineers going 10-for-11 and Clarkson shooting 8-for-9.

The second half was more of the same at the start as Clarkson pushed its lead to eight points (38-30), but watched Rensselaer go on a 10-0 run, including eight straight points from Sam Krumbhaar, to take a 40-38 lead. That was the last burst from the Engineers, though, as Clarkson turned a tie (41-41) into a modest seven-point lead with a Colleen Daley jumper and two 3-pointers from Devin Sorell, as the teams finally broke their collective futility from beyond the arc. Starting the fourth quarter the Engineers scored a basket to pull within four (49-45), but RPI went cold and the Knights continued to score to push their advantage into double figures. Rensselaer finally tallied again with under two minutes to go, but the 7:28 stretch without a point was entirely too much to overcome as Clarkson cruised in the final period.

Loggins produced yet another double-double in the effort and she also surpassed 1500 career points overall. Devin Sorell tossed in 15 points and went 3-for-5 down the stretch after opening the game with 11 straight misses. Alyssia Marsal and Stephanie Grobe also each added 12 points for Clarkson. Krumbhaar finished with a game-high 20 points while LaKissa Martin scored 11 points in 17 minutes off the bench.
