Knights Start 2016-17 Women's Hoops Season with Win Over Oswego

Potsdam, NY – A strong defensive effort that was highlighted by 23 steals and 29 forced turnovers allowed the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team to start 2016-17 on the right foot, defeating Oswego State 63-46 Tuesday night at Alumni Gymnasium.

Clarkson raced out to a 9-2 lead in the first four-plus minutes, minimizing Oswego's chances with a strong defensive effort. However, over the next two minutes Oswego climbed back into the game, tying the game 9-9 on a Zana Dillard basket. Stephanie Grobe broke the tie with just over a minute to go with a 3-point play on a lay up and the and-one free throw. Grobe then tacked on two more points to make the score 14-9 at the end of the first quarter.

The Knights continued the momentum in the second quarter, scoring the first seven points in the opening three minutes. Madison Shea capped off the 12-0 with a jumper at 6:52. Though Oswego would start exchanging points with the Knights, Clarkson expanded its lead to 15 at the break when Tricia Loso made a free throw with 1.7 seconds left in the half.

Oswego was forced into 18 turnovers, with 14 coming as steals for Clarkson. Stephanie Grobe led the way for the Knights with 10 points and five steals in the opening 20 minutes, while Devin Sorell added eight points as Clarkson shot 46.7 (14-for-30) from the floor. Madison Shea shot just 1-for-4 from the field, but contributed mightily with six assists and four steals. For Oswego, Courtney Ameele produced 11 points, going 3-for-5 from beyond the 3-point arc.

Neither team shot well in the third quarter, with the Knights going just 4-for-15 and Oswego hitting only two of its nine attempts from the field. Clarkson carried a 14-point advantage into the fourth quarter and extended the margin to as many as 19 points. The Lakers trimmed the deficit to 12 points with just under four minutes to go, but could only muster one point the rest of the way, allowing Clarkson to pull away for the victory.

Molly Stewart shot 6-for-8 from the floor for a team-high 16 points for Clarkson, adding in four steals. Grobe also finished with 16 points and five steals. Sorell pushed into double digits for 13 points, while Shea had a solid all-around effort with six rebounds, eight assists and five steals. The Lakers' Ameele finished with 16 points, but committed seven turnovers. Mary Mazzella also scored 10 points, while Heather Hebert added seven points and eight boards.
