Knights Volleyball Fall Twice at Emory Invitational

Atlanta, GA - Senior Katrina Lane recorded 22 kills and hit .327 from the outside overall, but it wasn't enough for the Clarkson University Volleyball team to come away with a victory on Friday as the Golden Knights dropped matches to Randolph-Macon and Emory in non-league action.

The Golden Knights, who fell to 19-12, lost their fifth straight five-set match of the year, including their third in seven days, in the opener, dropping a 20-25, 25-22, 17-25, 25-20, 15-12 decision to Randolph-Macon (20-4). In the nightcap, eighth-ranked Emory proved too much for Clarkson to handle as the Eagles defeated the Knights in three 25-10, 25-18, 25-15.

Against Randolph-Macon, the Golden Knights saw their five-set match struggles continue as they lost their fifth straight such game after starting the year 4-0. The first two sets were close throughout, but Clarkson appeared to break through in the third when they rushed out to a 14-3 lead and finished off the set with an eight-point win. The Yellow Jackets made sure that the game would go to five sets by rebounding to a 25-20 win. The topsy-turvy nature of the match continued in the fifth as the squads were tied 8-8 and a true sprint to 15 was underway. Clarkson led 11-9, but then dropped five straight points on two attack errors, two reception errors and a kill. The Knights stopped the streak to make it 14-12, but a setting error ended any hopes of a comeback.

Katrina Lane led Clarkson on offense with 15 kills while Rachael Aird chipped in 14 kills and five total blocks (two solo, three assists). Maddie Bredehoeft had a double-double with 10 kills and 18 digs and Rachel Reusch had the best hitting percentage with a .348 clip on a 9-1-23 line and also added five total blocks (two solo, three assists). Kate Isaksen contributed 29 digs and six assists and Jillian Saenz had 45 assists and 10 digs. For the Yellow Jackets, Rebecca McGlivery scored 17 kills and matched that total with 17 digs. Mariah Clark (13 kills) and Miranda Hall (11 kills) also produced on offense, with Erin Quinn distributing 36 assists and 26 digs. Quinn also scored four aces, helping Randolph-Macon enjoy a 9-2 edge in that department.

The second match of the day was a lopsided loss for the Knights as eighth-ranked Emory was on point with its offense throughout the match. The Eagles were in system throughout and hit above .500 in each of the first two sets before "slumping" to .333 in the third set, making just four errors on 91 swings in the match, with two of those coming on the final three points that went Clarkson's way. The first and final sets were double-digit losses for the Knights, but in the second set Clarkson was able to endure a 17-1-31 line on offense by Emory until late. The two teams traded points all the way up until the 13-11 mark and just a few points later the Knights were still down by just two (16-14). However, the Eagles held off the Knights with three kills in the waning moments to come out ahead.

Katrina Lane again was the top hitter for Clarkson with a .583 hitting percentage thanks to a 7-0-12 line, though Rachael Aird did have one more kill in the match for a team-high of eight. Jillian Saenz recorded 25 assists and Kate Isaksen produced 16 digs. For Emory, Jessica Holler hit .400 with nine kills and six block assists, and Kathryn Trinka needed just 14 swings to record nine kills. Morgan McKnight and Sydney Leimbach each added in seven kills. Hannah Billings found her teammates for 21 assists and Sarah Maher tossed in 13 digs.
