Golden Knights Fall to Cortland 5-4

A late comeback fell one goal short as the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team lost to 16th ranked Cortland State 5-4 on Wednesday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.

Clarkson now has a 2-4 overall record while Cortland is 3-4.

Cortland would dominate the first period, as they scored the only three goals in the period, including two in the last forty seconds. Sophomore Ryan St. Croix (Camillus, NY) got the Golden Knights on the board at 11:46 in the second period when he scored his team-leading 11th goal of the season. Senior Matthew Gold (Pittsford, NY) added a goal at 9:45 to make the score 3-2 heading into halftime.

Cortland added two goals in the third period to take a 5-2 lead heading into the third period. Clarkson was held scoreless for more than ten minutes in the fourth quarter until senior Robert Linder (Marcellus, NY) scored at 4:31 to give the Green and Gold some life. St. Croix added his second goal of the game at 2:34 to draw Clarkson within one. Clarkson had multiple chances to score the tying goal, including a possession with less than ten seconds to play, but the Red Dragons' defense held strong and they were able to escape with a 5-4 victory.

Clarkson sophomore goalie Nick Strandholm (Happy Valley, OR) finished with 12 saves for Clarkson. Strandholm also picked up a team-high four ground balls. Clarkson outshot the Red Dragons 24-23, but was 0-3 on extra-man opportunities while Cortland scored on one of its two chances. Cortland also held a 7-4 advantage on faceoffs.

Clarkson will travel to Troy, NY where they will match-up with Rensselaer in a Liberty League contest at 1:00 pm on Saturday afternoon.
