Knights Drop Season Opener at Geneseo, 11-7

Rochester, NY - Advantages in shots, shots on goal, groundballs and face offs were positives for the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team on Sunday, but the Golden Knights trailed in the only statistic that mattered in an 11-7 loss to Geneseo in a game played on the campus of RIT.

The Golden Knights start the season 0-1, but look to get on the winning side of things next weekend when the team hosts Brockport. Geneseo improved to 2-0.

Geneseo got on the scoreboard first at 5:52 when Joe Chiara found the back of the net and the team never trailed again. Clarkson scored two minutes later to tie the score, but Geneseo responded with three goals in the next five minutes. Fortunately for the visitors, the Golden Knights rallied with two of the next three goals, including one with just five seconds remaining in the half by Ryan St. Croix.

The third period saw Geneseo score three of the four goals and then one to begin the fourth to take a 9-4 lead. However, Matt Gold scored a man-up gola at 9:23 in the fourth and RJ Linder added another to pull the Golden Knights within three (9-6) with eight minutes left in the game. That would be as close as the Golden Knights could get, though, despite a late goal from Matt Gold

Ryan St. Croix scored three times to lead the Knights on offense, while Matt Gold contributed two goals and an assist. Mark Nortz and RJ Linder each scored once, and Corey Herrington and Ryan DaRin each tallied an assist. Dylan Broomfield was dominant on faceoffs, winning 17 of his 22 tries at midfield and scooping up six groundballs. Austin Case also tied for the game-high with six groundballs and Linder produced four groundballs.

For Geneseo, nine different players scored at least one goal, though Steve Cregan and Steve Aziz each scored twice. Cregan had three points overall, added four groundballs, and also caused a pair of turnovers.

Alex Howell made 11 saves and had three groundballs in the Geneseo crease, while Clarkson's Nick Strandholm made five stops and had four groundballs. Clarkson held a 32-27 lead in shots, a 18-16 edge in shots on goal, won 17 of the 22 faceoffs, and won 34 groundballs to Geneseo's 26.
