Clarkson Falls in Overtime

A Dartmouth goal early in overtime spoiled a comeback bid by the Clarkson University Hockey team as Dartmouth handed the Golden Knights a 3-2 loss at Cheel Arena on Friday night.

Clarkson, which has lost three straight, falls to 11-16-4 overall and stands in eight-place in the conference with an 8-9-2 ECAC Hockey mark. The Golden Knights host Harvard on Saturday in the final regular season game at Cheel Arena before closing out the season at Rensselaer and Union next weekend.

Trailing 2-0 late in the second period, the Green and Gold relied upon their power play to tie the game early in the third period. Clarkson got it going with 1:36 remaining in the second period when freshman defenseman Kelly Summers (Golden Lake, ONT) slipped in a wrist shot from the left circle just inside the post for a power-play marker and his sixth career goal. Freshman Janick Asselin (Coaticook, QUE) and sophomore defenseman James de Haas (Mississauga, ONT) assisted.

Sophomore A.J. Fossen (Maple Grove, MN) tied the game 2-2 when his shot out of the corner deflected off a Dartmouth defenseman in front and went up and over Big Green goaltender James Kruger for his second goal of the season, a power-play tally at 9:06 of the third. Freshman Sam Vigneault (Baie-Comeau, QUE) and junior Paul Geiger (Stouffville, ONT) assisted.

Dartmouth, however, pulled out the road win 66 seconds into sudden-victory overtime when Eric Neiley tipped in a centering pass from Brandon McNally.

After a scoreless first period, Dartmouth scored twice in a seven-minute span midway through the second frame to grab the lead. Carl Hesier tallied the game's first goal at 9:49 when he jammed a shot in at the side of the crease. Jesse Beamish gave the visitors a two-goal margin, connecting on his shot from the left circle at 16:29.

Clarkson outshot the Big Green 26-23, including a 22-14 margin over the second and third periods.

Junior Greg Lewis (Mars, PA) posted 20 saves. Kruger finished with 24 stops.

The Knights went 2-of-2 on the power play and killed off Dartmouth's lone man-advantage opportunity.
