Clarkson Falls by One to St. Lawrence

In another intense battle between the Clarkson University Hockey team and St. Lawrence, the visiting Saints came out on top at Cheel Arena on Saturday to gain a 2-1 ECAC Hockey victory before a North Country crowd of 3,719.

Clarkson, which saw its winning streak stopped at three games, lost for the first time in 10 league games (8-1-1) against its archrival. The Golden Knights stand at 10-12-4 overall and own a fourth-place 7-5-2 ECAC Hockey mark. Clarkson closes out a five-game home stand next weekend hosting Union and Rensselaer.

St. Lawrence, which has won five straight and six of its last seven games, improves to 14-10-2 overall and 10-4 in the conference.

Clarkson outshot the Saints 31-29. Both teams were 0-of-3 on the power play.

St. Lawrence enjoyed the better of the play in the first period with a 14-6 shot advantage, but it was the Green and Gold who struck first.

Senior Joe Zarbo (Grand Island, NY) continued his scoring prowess against St. Lawrence when he put the Knights on top early in the opening period with his fifth goal all-time against the Saints. Zarbo took a pass from sophomore Jordan Boucher (St. Therese, QUE) in the neutral zone and skated with puck along the left boards and behind the St. Lawrence net. Zarbo circled back to the left faceoff dot where he fired in a shot that trickled through traffic in front and past St. Lawrence goaltender Kyle Hayton at 6:17 for his team-high eighth goal of the season.

Late in the first period St. Lawrence tied it up when Clarkson failed to clear the zone. The Saints' Patrick Doherty finished off a pass from Tommy Thompson with a quick, rising wrist shot from the bottom of the left circle that beat the Knights' junior goaltender Greg Lewis (Mars, PA) stick-side high at 19:14. The goal snapped Lewis' streak of shutout hockey at 166:59.

St. Lawrence grabbed the lead midway through the middle frame when Joe Sullivan took a behind-the-net pass from Ben Masella at the top of the crease and tallied his third goal of the year at 9:34 for the game-winner.

Clarkson outshot St. Lawrence 13-6 over the final 20 minutes, but could not come up with the equalizer.

Lewis finished with 27 saves, while Hayton posted 30 stops.

The Route 11 rivals split the ECAC Hockey series with each winning a league game on the others' home ice. St. Lawrence gained a 2-1-1 mark in the four overall meetings this year with both wins coming in Potsdam.
