Knights Faceoff in ECHL Kelly Cup Finals

Featuring Clarkson University Hockey alumni on both teams, the Reading Royals and the Stockton Thunder are battling in the Eastern Conference Hockey League’s Kelly Cup Championship Final. Reading, with former Golden Knight forward Julien Cayer playing a role, leads the best-of-seven series 2-0.

The ECHL’s Championship Series resumes on Tuesday, May 21 when the playoffs move to the West Coast. Games Three, Four and Five, if necessary, will be played at the Stockton Arena in Stockton CA. Former Clarkson players Shawn Weller and Nik Pokulok, will be looking to lead the Thunder to their first victory in the championship series.
 
Reading won the first two games at the Sovereign Center in Reading, PA. The Royals defeated Stockton 6-5 in overtime of the series

opener on May 18. Cayer recorded the primary assist on the game’s opening goal. Weller tallied the Thunder’s first goal. Reading shut out Stockton 4-0 on May 19.
 
The Royals, the top seed from the Eastern Conference, advanced to the ECHL Finals by dispatching the Greenville Road Warriors in the Eastern Conference Quarter-Finals (4-1); the Florida Everblades in the semis (4-3); and the Cincinnati Cyclones in the conference finals (4-1).
 
Stockton, the fourth seed from the Western Conference, defeated the Las Vegas Wranglers in seven games in the Western Conference Quarter-Finals; the Alaska Aces in six games; and the Idaho Steelheads in five.
 
The championship series will return to the Sovereign Center for Games Six (if necessary) and Seven (if necessary) on Tuesday, May 28 and Wednesday, May 29.

Skating in all 20 playoff games, Weller has scored seven goals and three assists for 10 points. Pokulok has also played in all 20 postseason games, recording two goals, including the overtime game-winner in the 4-3 sudden-death victory over the Alaska Aces in Game Six of the ECHL Western Conference semifinals on April 30 at Sullivan Arena in Anchorage.
 
After missing action since March 30, Cayer has played in the past four playoff games, posting one assist. Cayer was selected for the Fan's Choice Awards "Heart Award" in 2012-13.

Former Clarkson all-star defenseman Randy Jones is currently playing for the Oklahoma City Barons in the American Hockey League playoffs. Oklahoma City has advanced to the AHL Western Conference Finals by way of their 3-2 Western Conference Semifinal series win over the Texas Stars. The Barons will take on the winner of the series between the Toronto Marlies and Grand Rapids Griffins. In 10 AHL playoff games, Jones has recorded one goal and three assists, and boasts a team-high +14 plus/minus rating.
