Fritz and Governale Lead Knights at NCAA Atlantic Cross Country Regionals

Rochester, NY – Junior Dan Fritz (Cicero, NY) and sophomore Sarah Governale (Wading River, NY) led the Clarkson University Cross Country teams’ respective packs as the Golden Knights closed out the 2012 season as the NCAA Division III Atlantic Regionals held at Genesee Valley Park.

The Golden Knights’ men finished 15th among 44 teams with 446 total points while the women placed 26th among 39 teams with 688 points.

Fritz finished in 41st overall among 297 runners, 1:10 off the pace set by the winner in the 8,000-meter event, in 26:24.0. Senior Patrick Carroll (Queensbury, NY) was the next Clarkson runner in 64th place, sprinting across the finish line in 26:47.6. Classmate Andrew Gelston (White Plains, NY) came in 90th in 27:08.6 and was closely followed by junior Adam Merkwan (Meredith, NH) in 99th, just eight seconds after Gelston in 27:16.1. Junior Ryan Ash (Glens Falls, NY) rounded out Clarkson’s scoring in the event by finishing in 152nd in 27:58.8. Freshmen Mike Feeney (Lockport, NY) and John Bell (Marcellus, NY) also ran in the race, but finished out of the top five scoring spots, coming in 175th and 206th, respectively.

Governale was the top finisher among the women, repeating her performance at the Liberty League Championships, coming in 69th overall among 277 runners in 23:43.8 in the 6,000-meter race. The next four runners for Clarkson were separated by approximately one minute total, with junior Catherine Zarnofsky (Glenville, NY) coming in 122nd in 24:27.2 to lead the group after Governale. Thirty-three seconds later senior Arianne Loeber (Rhinecliff, NY) crossed the finish line for 152nd and in a 28 second span, teammates freshman Chelsea Farinacci (Huntington, NY) and senior Rachel Bachman (Queensbury, NY) raced to 166th and 179th, respectively to finish off Clarkson’s 688 points. Freshman Meghan McKenna (Hamburg, NY) and sophomore Susan Lopez (Syracuse, NY) also ran in the race, but fell short of Clarkson’s top five, placing in 210th and 220th, respectively.
