The Clarkson University Hockey team could not capitalize on a strong start and ended up falling to Carleton University 6-2 in exhibition play before 1,847 fans at Cheel Arena on Sunday evening.

The Golden Knights open up NCAA play at WCHA powerhouse Colorado College with a two-game series at the World Arena in Colorado Springs next weekend.

Clarkson came out flying to start the first and seemed to score the opening goal just 12 seconds in, but the play was ruled off after the referee’s whistle had blown. The Knights held a 7-0 shot advantage over Carleton before the Raves registered their first shot on goal against Clarkson’s freshman netminder Andrew Hunt (Surrey, BC) eight minutes into the game.

The visitors soon picked up their pace and tallied four straight to hold a commanding lead after the opening 20 minutes. Defenseman Mike Folkes started the scoring at 8:23, connecting on a rising shot from the point that found its way past a screened Hunt and just under the crossbar. Shane Bakker made it 2-0 with a shorthanded breakaway tally at 14:07. At 16:14, Carleton went on top 3-0 when Mitch Porowski knocked in a rebound at the side of the net just after a Ravens’ power-play ended. Bakker scored his second of the period, a power-play goal at 18:15.

The Ravens added two more scores in the second stanza to hold a 6-0 lead midway through the contest. Andrew Glass tallied at 5:23 and Nick Duhn converted at 12:01.

Last year’s leading scorer from the blueline, sophomore Sam Labrecque (Granby, QUE) put Clarkson on the scoreboard at 16:57 of the second. Freshman Simon Bessette (St. Jean, QUE) and senior Adam Pawlick (Utica, NY) earned assists.

Freshman defenseman Paul Geiger (Stouffville, ONT) tallied Clarkson’s second goal, a power-play marker on blast from the top of the slot at 9:14 of the third. Sophomore Patrick Marsh (Oakville, ONT) and senior Andrew Himelson (Monroe, NY) assisted.

Clarkson outshot the Ravens 37-26. Hunt started for the Knights and posted six first-period stops. Senior Cody Rosen (Kingston, ONT) played the final 40 minutes and turned aside 14 of the 16 shots he faced. Ryan Dube made 35 saves for Carleton. Both teams were 1-of-6 on the power play.
