Five former Golden Knight athletic standouts will be inducted into the Clarkson University Athletic Hall of Fame this July during the University’s annual Summer Reunion. Clarkson will honor Art Smith ’56, John Babcock ’62, Russ Hall ’69, Paul Bovee ’72 and Katie Johnson ’00. Ceremonies for the seventh induction class into the Clarkson Athletic Hall of Fame will take place on Friday, July 9 at 6:00 p.m. in the Camp Atrium.
A two-time All-American defenseman, Smith played four seasons on Clarkson’s highly successful hockey teams from 1952-56 and was a key member on the Golden Knights’ 1955-56 undefeated team.
Babcock was a standout wrestler for the Golden Knights in the early 1960s and was a dominant force on the mat during Clarkson’s 1962 undefeated 10-0 team. During his three-year career wrestling in the light middle-weights, Babcock compiled 24 wins and recorded numerous pin falls.
Hall was an outstanding two-sport student-athlete for the Green and Gold during the late 1960s, excelling in basketball and baseball. He ranks among Clarkson’s most prolific scorers on the basketball court, amassing 1,341 points, and was a smooth-fielding, hard-hitting shortstop for the Knights’ baseball team.
A talented midfielder for Clarkson’s lacrosse team, Bovee earned numerous all-star honors during the early 1970s, capped off by being named a 1972 All-American. A productive offensive force and a dominating faceoff specialist, Bovee helped to lead the Golden Knights to their first ever postseason appearance with a showing in the 1972 USILA Tournament.
Earning all-star honors on the Nordic Ski trails and in the classroom, Johnson was a standout student-athlete at Clarkson in the late 1990s and into 2000. She was a four-time United States Collegiate Ski Association Women’s Nordic National Champion and was twice selected as a GTE/CoSIDA 1st-Team Academic National All-American, earning the prestigious honor in 1999 and 2000.
The Clarkson Athletic Hall of Fame was established at the University to recognize those individuals, who either through participation, support, or interest, have made outstanding contributions to Clarkson Athletics, and who have helped bring recognition, honor and distinction to the University.
Fifty-two members have been previously inducted, beginning with the inaugural class, consisting of 15 individuals, in the fall of 1992. Five more Clarkson athletic standouts were honored in 1995, nine more former Golden Knight all-stars were inducted in 2004, and nine more were honored in 2005. The Class of 2007 saw six more former Clarkson greats join the illustrious group and eight more were inducted in 2008.
