Tape Measure Homers From Torbitt and Russell Highlight Clarkson's Game Against Ripon

Winter Haven, FL – Senior Brady Torbitt (Fulton, NY) and junior Garrett Russell (Lake George, NY) hit tape-measure home runs that both topped 450 feet, but they were far from the only bombers on an offensive day as the Clarkson University Baseball team fell 18-8 against Ripon College Sunday afternoon.

The Golden Knights, who dropped to 1-3 on the season, will face Stevens Institute of Technology Monday morning.

Clarkson scored in the top of the first inning on an RBI-single from Torbitt, but Ripon tallied six in the bottom half of the inning as the first six runners reached base before an out was recorded. The Knights responded with six in the top of the second inning to reclaim the lead as Jerry Coleman (Potsdam, NY) cleared the bases with a triple, right before Torbitt hit a home run to straight away center which cleared the 18-foot high fence 410 feet away from home plate, giving Clarkson a 7-6 lead.

Unfortunately, the offense for Ripon would continue as the team scored three in the second, one in the fourth, and four more in the fifth to take a 14-7 advantage. In the top of the seventh inning, Russell topped Torbitt’s shot by lifting a home run to center field which carried over the fence and went off the top of a building that measured more than 460 feet away. That solo home run would be the last score for the Knights, though, as the team couldn’t muster any more runs.

Coleman again went 3-for-4 with three RBIs while Matt Curry (Richland, NY) was 2-for-4. Torbitt went 2-for-5 with three driven in, and Russell was 3-for-5. Kyle Moldoff (Nassau, NY) had the start for Clarkson and took the loss. Jordan Yells (Waterloo, NY) came on in relief and struck out four in three and two-thirds innings.
