Clarkson Falls at St. Lawrence in Liberty League Tournament Championship Game

After a thrilling 14-13 victory over Skidmore in the opening round of the Liberty League Tournament on Friday, the Clarkson University Lacrosse team could not keep pace with regular season champion St. Lawrence University on Sunday as the Saints defeated the Golden Knights 15-6 in the conference title game in Canton.

 

Clarkson, closes out the 2009 campaign with a 10-5 record, the first time since 2002 that the Green and Gold posted double digits in the win column.

 

Eighteenth-ranked St. Lawrence (12-3) dominated from the start jumping out to a 4-0 first-quarter lead, and allowed the Knights just one shot while forcing six Clarkson turnovers in the opening 15 minutes.

 

The Saints out scored Clarkson 7-3 in the second quarter for a commanding 11-3 lead at the half. St. Lawrence put it on cruise control over the final 30 minutes, out scoring the Green and Gold 4-3 in the second half.

 

Senior Tom Ross (Adams, NY) led the Knights offensively with two goals and two assists. Classmates Greg Gibbons (Baldwinsville, NY) and Erik Hilfinger (Ann Arbor, MI) scored one goal each. Sophomore Tyler Long (Liverpool, NY) and freshman Bryan Huff (Hillsborough, NJ) also tallied one goal each. Senior Brian Hoey (Auburn, NY) recorded two assists.

 

Collin Moon paced a balanced St. Lawrence effort with three goals.

 

The Saints out shot Clarkson 44-21 and held a distinct advantage in ground balls, 41-24. PJ Santora excelled on faceoffs for St. Lawrence, winning 18-of-23 draws to ignite the Saints’ attack.

 

Senior John Szvoren (Hamburg, NY) posted 15 saves, including 10 in the first half. Senior Andrew Kott (Auburn, NY) and junior Evan Renwick (Wappinger  Falls, NY) scooped up a team-high six ground balls each for the Knights.
