Ross Scores Five Goals to Keep Clarkson Unbeaten in League Play

April 11, 2009

Senior Tom Ross scored four goals in the fourth quarter against Hamilton on Saturday.

Clinton, NY – A run of six straight goals to start the second half was more than enough to break the halftime tie as the Clarkson University Men’s Lacrosse team cruised to a 13-5 victory over Hamilton College in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights improved to 8-2 overall and 3-0 in conference games while the Continentals dropped to 3-7 and 1-3. Clarkson looks to continue on its roll on Wednesday when the team hosts St. Lawrence.

After Hamilton tied the score up at 4-4 just five seconds before halftime, the Golden Knights closed the contest with nine of the final 10 scores, including a 4-0 edge in the third quarter to take an 8-4 lead. Senior Tom Ross (Adams, NY) then scored four of his five goals in the fourth quarter, including the game’s final three tallies, to give the Knights the lopsided victory.

Ross scored six points on five goals and an assist, along with four groundballs, to lead Clarkson offensively. Senior Greg Gibbons (Baldwinsville, NY) scored three goals and added an assist to push him to 200 career points, becoming just the fourth player ever at Clarkson to amass that figure. He also added a team-high five groundballs. Classmate Brian Hoey (Auburn, NY) also scored four points on two goals and two assists. Sophomore Tyler Long (Liverpool, NY) scored twice and assisted on another goal and Matt Cyr (Cheshire, CT) also added a score. Senior Jon Cathcart (Homer, NY) assisted on two goals and freshman Bryan Huff (Hillsborough, NJ) added an assist to round out the Clarkson point scorers.

John Szvoren (Hamburg, NY) made 10 saves for the Knights, with freshman Pat Sweeney (Canton, NY) coming on to make a save in the fourth quarter in relief.

The Knights controlled the peripheral stats as well, dominating on faceoffs (16-6), groundballs (35-18), and shots (38-23).
