Amherst Pounds Out 25 Hits in Victory over Golden Knights

March 17, 2009

Auburndale, FL – Though the offense was there for the Clarkson University Baseball team Tuesday afternoon, a fast and dry infield helped Amherst’s already potent offense to a 22-9 victory in game six of the Golden Knights’ spring trip.

The Golden Knights fell to 2-4 on their Florida trip and will return to action on Wednesday when they face Framingham State in a doubleheader.

The Lord Jeffs scored nine runs in the first two innings and appeared ready to run away with the contest, but Clarkson showed that its three loud outs in the first inning was just a portent of things to come. Senior Austin Pitkin (Dexter, NY) continued his hot start to 2009 by hitting a two-run bomb in the bottom of the second inning to put the Knights on the board. An inning later, Matt Holiday (Syracuse, NY) hit his first home run of the season, letting loose with a three-run homer to left center. A three-run triple by Matt Giordano (Liverpool, NY) in the fourth had Clarkson thinking comeback, but two runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings pushed Amherst’s lead to a significant margin that Clarkson was unable to overcome.

Both Pitkin and Holiday finished the day 3-for-4 at the plate, with Holiday driving in four runs and Pitkin picking up two RBIs. Matt Curry (Richland, NY) also went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Jake Groszewski (Rochester, NY) took the loss for Clarkson, as he and five other pitchers combined to allow 22 runs, including 17 earned, along with 25 hits and nine walks.
