Potsdam, NY – Senior Marie-Jo Gaudet (Sherbrooke, QUE) and junior Britney Selina (Thornhill, ONT) became the charter members of the 100-point club for the Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team by delivering three-point nights in a 4-1 victory over Yale University in front of 362 fans Friday night at Cheel Arena.
The Golden Knights improved to 11-6-4 overall and 5-2-2 in ECAC Hockey with the victory, avenging an early season loss to Yale, which fell to 7-10 overall and 3-7 in conference games. The Knights look to extend their winning streak to four games on Saturday afternoon when they face Brown University.
Yale got on the scoreboard first, striking with a power play goal midway through the first frame. The Bulldogs’ top line accounted for the scoring with Aleca Hughes redirecting a shot by Crysti Howser from the top of the left circle at 11:34. Danielle Kozlowski also earned an assist on the goal.
It appeared as if the Bulldogs would enter the first intermission with a one-goal lead, but a two-on-one developed for Clarkson late in the frame. At 18:59, senior Marie-Jo Gaudet (Sherbrooke, QUE) sent a pass across the ice to linemate Juana Baribeau (Amos, QUE), who was all alone at the top of the left circle. From there, she skated in unimpeded and wristed a shot past Yale goaltender Genny Ladiges, her 14th goal of the campaign. Britney Selina (Thornhill, ONT) also assisted on the goal, her team-high 20th of the season.
In the second period, Gaudet and Selina made Clarkson Women’s Hockey history. With just two minutes expired from the stanza, Selina sent a pass from the top of the circle to Gaudet, who was positioned perfectly in the slot for a one-timer opportunity. Gaudet didn’t fail in her shot as she whistled the puck past the goalie’s glove for her 15th goal of the season. Selina’s assist was her 21st, as both players surpassed Ashley Shaidle as the program’s all-time leading scorers with 99 career points. Less than seven minutes later, the two would become the first players to reach 100 career points at Clarkson, as Gaudet sent a pass from behind the net to Selina for another one-time at 8:54, Selina’s fourth goal of the season and Gaudet’s 16th assist.
Late in the third period, the Knights picked up an insurance goal on the power play. With a little less than a minute remaining in the man-advantage, senior captain Kimberly McKenney (Smiths Falls, ONT) found herself alone in front of the net, depositing the puck into the back of the net after picking up an errant shot after a scrum in front, giving the Knights a 4-1 lead. The goal was McKenney’s fourth of the season, while sophomore Melissa Waldie (Newmarket, ONT) and Genevieve Lavoie (Delson, QUE) each assisted on the power-play marker.
Sophomore Lauren Dahm (Baldwinsville, NY) finished with 16 saves for her ninth victory of the season, while Ladiges made 21 saves for Yale. Clarkson went 1-for-2 on the power play and the Bulldogs were 1-for-5. The Knights finished with a 25-17 edge in shots, including a 16-9 advantage over the last two periods.
