Potsdam, NY – Four different players scored goals in the final two periods as the Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team swept the weekend against Maine with a 4-1 victory in front of 277 fans Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena.
The Golden Knights reached double figures in victories with the win, moving to 10-6-4 overall. Maine fell to 4-15-2 overall. Clarkson continues its home stand next weekend when it hosts ECAC Hockey opponents Yale and Brown.
After a scoreless first period in which the Knights held a 14-2 advantage in shots, Clarkson took little time getting on the scoreboard in the second. Freshman Danielle Boudreau (Whitsby, ONT) tipped in a shot from the blueline by classmate Katelyn Ptolemy (Dinsmore, SASK) that slipped through the leg pads of Maine goalie Genevieve Turgeon at 1:50 of the first period. Sophomore Daris Tendler (Verwood, SASK) also assisted. Maine responded with a tipped-in goal of its own as Melissa Gagnon took a shot from the center of the blueline that was redirected by Amy Stech in the center of the slot. The power-play goal by the Black Bears was scored just 13 seconds (at 4:12) after Clarkson had been whistled for the infraction.
Two minutes later, Clarkson got back on top when juniors Genevieve Lavoie (Delson, QUE) and Britney Selina (Thornhill, ONT) combined on a score. Selina dropped the puck back to her classmate near the top of the right circle and Lavoie skated through the circle, avoiding defenders, before making a couple of stick-handling moves to flick the puck past the goalie. The goal was Lavoie’s fifth of the season and the assist was Selina’s team-high 18th.
Clarkson iced the game in the first few minutes of the third period, tallying twice in a span of 37 seconds. At 2:21, the school’s all-time leading goal scorer, Marie-Jo Gaudet (Sherbrooke, QUE), scored her fourth goal of the weekend when she skated around the net and found herself taking a shot from up close in the slot. At 2:58, freshman Gabrielle Kosziwka (Limehouse, ONT) scored her first collegiate goal with a tip in on a shot from the point. Selina earned her second assist of the game and Courtney Olson (Brunswick, CA) also assisted.
Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Dahm (Baldwinsville, NY) recorded 12 saves for her eighth victory of the season, while Turgeon made 34 saves for Maine.
Selina and Gaudet continued their race to become the first Clarkson Women’s Hockey player to reach 100 career points. Selina’s two points pushed her to 97, just one shy of the school’s career mark, which matches Gaudet’s 97 career points.
