Oswego, NY – A day after splitting a conference doubleheader against Union, the Clarkson University Baseball team took to the road for the second straight day and went 1-1 again with a 5-3 loss and 6-2 win at Oswego State on Wednesday afternoon.

The Golden Knights split their second straight doubleheader on Wednesday to move to 10-11 overall while Oswego State moved to 10-6. Clarkson returns to conference action this weekend when they host the University of Rochester on Saturday at 1:00 pm.

In the opener, the Knights used some well-placed infield singles to score two runs. Junior Mike Bresett (Norwood, NY), who went 3-for-3 in the first game, drove in a run with a bad hop single and Matt Curry (Richland, NY) delivered a two-out single for the second run. Oswego responded with a run in each of the first two innings and the game remained scoreless until the top of the fifth when Bresett led off the frame with a single and was sent home on another two-out hit by Curry.

The lead would be short-lived as Oswego scored three in the sixth inning as three different pitchers struggled to get the Lakers out. After the game was knotted up at 3-3, a bases loaded walk and a sacrifice fly gave Oswego the 5-3 lead, which they would hold on to after the final three outs.

Besides Bresett’s three-hit game, Curry added in a 2-for-4 performance and Cale Giroux (Cortland, NY) matched that effort with a 2-for-4 game of his own, extending his hit-streak to 10 games.

In game two, the Golden Knights capitalized on a three-error inning by Oswego to score four runs in the second inning. Curry came through with yet another run-scoring hit and Sean Griffin (Walden, NY) batted in another run with a two-out single. An inning later, Steve Magovney (Watertown, NY) hit an opposite-field single to score Bresett, who led off the inning with a single and had stolen second. Clarkson would add its sixth and final run of the contest in the fourth when Matt Giordano (Liverpool, NY) hit a one-out double to center field. Two batters later, sophomore Brady Torbitt (Fulton, NY) then sent a towering fly ball to left-center for a triple to give Clarkson a 6-1 lead.

Kyle Moldoff (Nassau, NY) picked up his first career victory thanks to the NCAA’s pre-determined start rule, allowing four hits over three innings. Rick Bittner (Lancaster, NY) finished up the final four innings, giving up just three hits and two walks while striking out four, to earn the save.

Seven different players recorded hits for Clarkson in game two.
