Knights Downhillers Close Out Regular Season With Win at Skidmore Invitational

February 18, 2008

West Mountain - While the men dominated all weekend, the women of the Clarkson University Alpine Ski team took control of day two as both squads won the combined titles at the Skidmore Invitational, the final USCSA Adirondack Division race of the season.

The Golden Knights' men won both the giant slalom and slalom to cruise to the overall title, while the women came in second in the giant, but recovered nicely in the slalom to take first overall as well. Clarkson will now compete in the USCSA Mideast Regionals for a shot at the National Championships.

Senior Kurt Naser (Arlington, MA) won both events to take the combined title for the third time in five races this winter. Drew Bonner (Killington, VT), who claimed the overall title last week, finished second behind his teammate, claiming second in the giant and third in the slalom. Freshman Clayton Reynolds (Rome, NY) was fifth in the slalom and ninth in the giant slalom. Other top 10 finers for the weekend were Ben Cohen (Old Forge, NY), who came in seventh in the giant slalom, Nick Skowyra (St. Paul, MN), who placed eighth in the slalom, and Rob Reed (West Suffield, CT), who finished 10th in the slalom. Five Clarkson skiers finished in the top 10 in the slalom.

Some of the top performers for the women raced inconsistently this weekend, but all produced enough to lead the team to the title. Margot Epstein (Sodus, NY) was second in the combined standings, helped by a third place finish in the giant and a fourth place showing in the slalom. Mallory Gilmore (Woodbury, CT) topped Epstein's finish in the slalom, and came in sixth in the giant slalom. Emma Masur (Wayne, NJ) finished ninth in the giant slalom, but didn't finish in the slalom, while Meghan Cleason (Canandaigua, NY) went the other way, dominating the slalom with a first-place, but struggling in the giant slalom with just a 15th-place performance.
