The Clarkson University Hockey team twice held one goals leads against Colorado College, but the 6th-ranked Tigers rattled off four unanswered goals to gain a 5-2 victory over the Golden Knights before 6,652 home fans at the World Arena in Colorado Springs on Friday night.
Clarkson, ranked 9th in the nation, and Colorado College will complete their non-league weekend series on Saturday night, beginning at 9:07 p.m. EST. The Knights, who saw their unbeaten streak come to an end at five games (4-0-1), lose for only the second time in 2008. The Green and Gold of ECAC Hockey own a 15-8-2 overall record.
The league leader in the WCHA, Colorado College, which is prefect at home this season at 12-0-0, improved its record to 19-7-1.
Clarkson started off strong against the Tigers when junior Chris D’Alvise (Mississauga, ONT) tallied just 1:58 after the opening faceoff, knocking in a rebound off junior defenseman Adam Bellows' (Lancaster, NY) shot from the point for his 9th goal of the year.
Colorado College tied it at 12:49 on Scott McCulloch’s tally.
Senior David Cayer (Longueuil, QUE) finished off a pass from freshman Brandon DeFazio (Mississauga, ONT) for a breakaway goal at 4:03 of the second, his sixth goal of the season, to put the Knights on top 2-1.
After that the Tigers stormed back with two goals in the period to take a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes, and then scored on the power play and shorthanded in the final frame to run their unbeaten streak against Clarkson to 8-0-1.
Colorado College held a distinct shot advantage, 42-17. Senior David Leggio (Williamsville, NY) made a season-high 37 saves. The Knights, who did not go on the power play until there was 7:41 left in the game, were 0-of-2 with the man advantage. The Tigers went 1-of-5 on the power play.
