Desmond Scores Sixth, But Knights Fall to Vassar, 2-1

October 10, 2008

Poughkeepsie, NY - Sophomore Scott Desmond (Enfield, CT) scored his sixth goal of the season in the first half against Vassar, but the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team gave up two goals midway through the contest and fell 2-1 to the Brewers in Liberty League action Friday afternoon.

The Golden Knights lost their fourth straight conference game to fall to 5-6-1 overall and 0-4-0 in the Liberty League, while Vassar moved to 6-4-0 overall and 1-2-0 in conference games. Clarkson plays Rensselaer at 2:00 pm on Saturday.

Desmond became the first player since the 2003 season (Ismael Mohammad) to score six goals in a single season when he tallied in the 27th minute against Vassar. Freshman Nate Hazen (Dalton, MA) send a pass in off a corner kick to Desmond, who settled the pass and blasted a shot into the net for the score.

It appeared as if the Knights would go into halftime with the lead, but the Brewers scored in the final three minutes. Brian Bianchetti scored on a long shot from nearly 40 yards out, unassisted, to knot the game up at 1-1.

Early on in the second half, Vassar took the lead for good when Jon Hootnick went one-on-one after receiving a pass from Matt Belli near midfield. The goal was Hootnick's seventh of the season.

While Vassar out shot Clarkson 21-12, neither team had many chances on goal. Clarkson's Mike St. Croix (Watertown, NY) made four saves on six shots on goal while Jake London of Vassar stopped two on three shots on goal.
