Hamilton, NY - Despite 37 shots on net, including several Grade-A opportunities from some of their top scorers, the Clarkson University Hockey team had to settle for a 1-1 tie at Colgate in ECAC Hockey action at Starr Rink in Hamilton on Friday night.
With the draw the Golden Knights moved into a tie for second place in ECAC Hockey with a 7-3-1 conference mark. Clarkson is one point behind league-leader Princeton, but has one game in hand on the Tigers. The Knights share 15 points with Quinnipiac, but also have a game in hand on the Bobcats. Clarkson owns a 12-7-2 overall record and plays at Cornell on Sunday afternoon in a game to be televised nationally on ESPNU, beginning at 4:00 p.m.
After a scoreless first period against Colgate, the Knights tallied their only goal when senior Steve Zalewski (New Hartford, NY) netted his team-high 13th goal of the season, while on the power play midway through the second frame. Clarkson’s leading goal scorer picked up a rebound at the side of the net off of senior Nick Dodge’s (Oakville, ONT) tip-in attempt, and lifted in his 50th career goal at 8:13. Junior Chris D’Alvise (Mississauga, ONT) also assisted.
Early in the third period, Colgate (8-9-4, 2-4-3) evened the score with its own power-play marker. Jesse Winchester scored at 3:59, for the first man-advantage goal against the Knights in the last 19 opponent power-play attempts.
Clarkson held a 25-13 shot advantage through the 40 minutes, but the Raiders owned a 12-11 edge in the third period, and out shot the Green and Gold 2-1 in the five-minute overtime session. Senior David Leggio (Williamsville, NY), who was denied his 50th career victory, finished with 26 saves.
The Knights were 1-of-4 on the power play, while Colgate was 1-of-5 with the man-advantage.
