Elmira, NY - Junior Elson Pickering (Brooklyn, NY) produced game-highs with 14 points, 12 rebounds, and 5 blocks, but the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team couldn't break its losing skid against Elmira, dropping a 63-47 decision Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Knights enter league play at home next weekend against Union and Skidmore on a four-game losing streak at 2-9 overall, looking to break that run against the Dutchmen at 8:00 pm Friday night. Elmira moved to 5-8 with its third straight victory.
The Golden Knights fell behind early and found themselves nearly doubled up after 18 minutes of action against the Soaring Eagles. With the score 33-17, and only two minutes remaining, the Golden Knights ended the half with an 8-0 run to narrow the margin to eight points, 33-25.
The deficit was still single digits after six minutes of the second half, but Elmira went on a 10-0 run over the course of four minutes midway through the period and were up by nearly 20 at that point. The Knights narrowed the gap to as few as 15 points, but Elmira continued to put pressure on and pushed its advantage to as many as 25, before finally settling for a 16-point win.
After scoring a season-low six points against NYU on Tuesday, Pickering came back in a big way for Clarkson with his 14-point, 12-rebound performance. His five blocks marked the fourth time this season that he has denied that many shots in a game. Keith Murray (Queens, NY) made three 3-pointers and was the only other Clarkson player in double figures, finishing with 10 points.
Most of the differences in the game seemed minimal, but Elmira shot 43.1 percent from the floor (22-for-51) with 13 turnovers compared to Clarksonm's 34.1 percent shooting (14-for-41) and 20 turnovers.
