Knights Earn Win In North Country Rivalry

September 4, 2007

Jenna Stock had a solid all-around effort in the win over St. Lawrence.

Canton, NY - Sophomore Jenna Stock (Johnstown, NY) produced a solid effort in three games Tuesday night, recording 24 assists, 14 digs and 6 kills as the Clarkson University Volleyball team picked up a 3-0 victory, 30-26, 30-20, 30-22, against Liberty League rival St. Lawrence at Burkman Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights improved to 2-3 overall and return to action this weekend when they face Russell Sage and Middlebury in the opening rounds of the North Country Invitational, held at Potsdam State. The Saints dropped to 2-3.

Clarkson never dominated the match as some of the passes were less than crisp, but the Golden Knights kept the ball in play and let the game come to them. In the third game, Clarkson led by 10 points, 13-3, but saw that advantage quickly evaporate before recovering for an eight-point victory in what proved to be the final game.

"Tonight we didn't play our best volleyball, but I'm very happy we pulled out the win," coach Johan Dulfer said. " We learned to defend a lead today and close out games. That's a big lesson we learned from the Hartwick match this past weekend (a 3-0 loss). St. Lawrence is a proud and well-coached team and I'm very happy with the way that we were able to regain our composure and close out the match."

Clarkson struggled hitting in games one and three, but game two saw the team record 19 of its 30 points on kills, including five by junior Hilary Lockwood (Victor, NY) and four by freshman Katie Fenner (Lansing, NY).

Overall, Jessica Agnew (Queensbury, NY) led Clarkson with 13 kills, followed by Lockwood with nine. Agnew also added three aces and seven digs. Classmate Amanda Rankin (Horseheads, NY) came through with 10 digs, 8 assists and 4 aces, all of which nearly came in succession. Freshman Alison Schroeder (Webster, NY) also added in 15 digs.
