Poughkeepsie, NY - Despite a tremendous disadvantage in shots, the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team was able to come away with a 1-1 tie against Vassar College in the Liberty League opener Friday afternoon at Prentiss Field.
With the tie, the Golden Knights moved to 1-3-2 overall and 0-0-1 in conference while the Brewers stand at 2-2-1 and 0-0-1. Clarkson travels to Troy, NY tomorrow to face Rensselaer.
The game initially appeared as though it might be a high-scoring affair as each team scored in the opening 10 minutes. Following an indirect kick by Catie Reed (Lafayette, NY), the ball squirted out to the edge of the penalty box where junior Jill Collins (Potsdam, NY) poked the ball back towards the center, where it bounced off a Brewer defender into the net to give the Knights a 1-0 lead.
Clarkson’s lead was short-lived, however, as Brewer Jordan Hynes answered just over a minute later. The freshman forward collected the ball around the 18-yard line and chipped a nicely-placed shot over Clarkson goalkeeper Meagan Emlaw’s (Norfolk, NY) head. The brief scoring flurry turned out to be all the scoring either team would manage in the next 100 minutes.
Vassar finished the game with a strong lead in shots over the Knights, 38-12, and also held a 9-0 lead in corners. Emlaw had 13 saves in the game while Vassar keeper Anne Hutchinson stopped six shots.
