Potsdam, NY - Two innings decided the Clarkson University Baseball team's fate on Sunday afternoon, but unfortunately those innings did not go the way of the Golden Knights as the team dropped a doubleheader to RIT, 5-2 and 7-5, at Snell Field.
The Golden Knights fell to 4-15 overall while the Tigers improved to 13-7 with sweeps of Clarkson and St. Lawrence on the weekend. Clarkson gets one day off before traveling to Troy, NY, to play conference rival Rensselaer on Tuesday.
The opening inning was an unlucky one for Clarkson starting pitcher Brady Torbitt (Fulton, NY) as he allowed four hits and three runs. After settling down, Torbitt pitched well enough to win in going five more innings and scattering five hits over that time frame, but the damage was done as Clarkson couldn't solve RIT starter Cory Langtry. The Tigers' righthander scattered eight hits and allowed two runs, but struck out only one batter. The top of RIT's lineup did most of the hitting for the Tigers as Matt George and Geoff Dornes each recorded multi-hit games.
The second game was a tighter affair as both teams scored in the first and third innings. Tied 2-2 after four and a half frames, a Brian Theilemann (Troy, NY) singled home two runners to give Clarkson a 4-2 lead with two innings to go. The Tigers responded with five hits in the top of the sixth inning as the tying and go-ahead runs came in on wild pitches. Clarkson had the tying run on second with no one out, but Jeff Bibbens came on to wiggle out of the jam for the Tigers as RIT preserved a 7-5 win.
Bibbens earned the save for RIT and also drove home three runs from the lineup's seventh spot. while Andy Scroger went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Matt Giordano (Liverpool, NY) went 2-for-3 to break out of a slump for Clarkson and Sean Griffin (Walden, NY) also went 2-for-2 with a pair of runs.
