Potsdam, NY – Despite a flurry of shots due to a late shorthanded situation, the Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team denied all of Colgate’s chances and held on for a 1-0 ECACHL victory Saturday afternoon in front of 208 fans at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights improved to 15-12-3 overall and 7-9-2 in conference play, reaffirming themselves in the conference post-season chase. Colgate dropped to 13-12-2 overall and 12-5-1 in conference, holding on to fourth place in the league standings thanks to a 9-3-1 run in the last 12 games.

For the second straight night, Clarkson dominated the opening period, holding a 13-3 advantage in shots. Even with the strong edge in scoring chances, the Golden Knights were unable to produce a goal in the opening 20 minutes.

That inability to score changed in the second frame when the Knights broke through near the close of a power play. With just two seconds remaining on an obstruction-hooking call against Colgate’s Tara French, Clarkson rushed the Raiders net with a 2-on-1 chance. Sophomore Marie-Jo Gaudet (Sherbrooke, QUE) held on to the puck and wrested a shot past Elayna Hamashuk to give Clarkson a 1-0 lead, with freshman Genevieve Lavoie (St. Laurent, QUE) and junior Amanda Dittmer (Mississauga, ONT) assisting. The goal was Gaudet’s eighth of the season.

The third period saw Colgate produce several scoring chances, but rebounds never seemed to find the stick of any Raiders’ players. Enjoying a power-play opportunity for the final 1:40 of the third, Colgate pushed the play in the Clarkson end and nearly tallied the game-tying goal, but senior Ashley Shaidle (Hudson, OH) turned aside the errant rebound with a swing of her stick, sending the puck out to the blue line and ending the threat.

Senior Kira Hurley (Pickering, ONT) stopped 20 shots for her second shutout of the season and the 19th of her career. Hamashuk made 29 saves for Colgate. Clarkson out shot the Raiders 30-20 and was 1-for-5 on the power play while holding Colgate scoreless in its only man-advantage chance.

Colgate was held scoreless for the weekend and hasn’t picked up a goal since a 9-0 drubbing of Union last weekend, a span of 126 minutes, 45 seconds without a tally.
