Potsdam, NY - After finding a way to tie the score in regulation, a pair of 3-pointers by the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team missed their mark in overtime as the Golden Knights lost 77-74 in extra time to Hilbert College Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Knights dropped to 1-2 overall while Hilbert College improved to 2-1. Clarkson faces RIT tomorrow at 5:30 pm. This is Hilbert's first win in four tries against the Knights, though the Hawks lost the previous three games by a combined six points.
The two teams went back and forth for most of the game, but the Hawks ended the first half with a sizeable advantage. Trailing by one point at 6:29, the Hawks ended the half with a 15-5 run to take a nine-point lead into the locker room. With less than 10 minutes remaining, the Golden Knights still were behind by eight points, but a quick run over the course of the next three minutes found the game tied. The two teams found themselves tied at 12 different times during the game, and one of those times came at the end of regulation when sophomore Brandon Linton (Queens, NY) hit a 3-pointer with nine seconds remaining in the game, capping a half in which the Knights shot 59.3 percent from the floor. Unfortunately, the shot was not a portent of things to come for the Knights as the team shot just 1-for-6 in the five-minute overtime, including two misses from beyond the 3-point arc on the team's final possession.
Junior Elson Pickering (Brooklyn, NY) continued his impressive play at the beginning of the season with his second straight double-double, scoring 21 points to go along with 10 rebounds, 3 blocks and 2 steals. Linton added 13 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 assists, and freshman Shawn Lasalita (San Diego, CA) scored 13 points, shooting 5-for-6 from the floor and 3-for-3 from beyond the 3-point arc. Junior Ryan Smith (Niagara Falls, NY) also scored 12 points on 5-for-7 shooting in his first action of the season.
Dallas Reinard led the Hawks with 20 points, shooting 11-for-12 from the free throw line. Mike Reyes produced 17 points and 6 assists, shooting 5-for-7 from the field including four 3-pointers, and Noah McHale added in 15 points and 8 rebounds for Hilbert.
