Potsdam, NY - Freshman Jessica Klopp (Eden, NY) recorded a team-high eight kills with a hitting percentage of .538 to help lead the Clarkson University Volleyball team to a three-game sweep over St. Lawrence, 30-17, 30-18 and 30-27, Tuesday evening at Alumni Gymnasium.
The Golden Knights improved to 13-10 overall while the Saints dropped to 13-8, their second loss to Clarkson this season. Clarkson moves on to the Liberty League/SUNYAC Challenge this weekend at Union where the team will face Skidmore, Union, New Paltz and Potsdam State.
Using a pair of lengthy runs in the first two games, the Golden Knights were able to win those contests handily. With the score tied 7-7, Clarkson ran off seven straight points in the first game to take control, and ended the game with a 7-2 run. In the second game the score was tied 3-3 before Clarkson took 12 of the next 14 points and cruised to a double-digit win. The third game was much closer as the two teams battled back and forth. Trailing 20-14 in the third game, Clarkson rallied to score nine of the next 12 points to tie it up and then scored four of the last five to earn the match victory.
"For today's match we challenged our team to come out strong, send a message, and really stay aggressive," coach Johan Dulfer said. "I thought across the board we did a very nice job of doing just that. Our offense was spread out, our passing was crisp, and there were two plays during our comeback in the third game where both our setters really took charge and delivered an unbelievable set. That sent a very clear message that we were going to win tonight."
Juniors Stacy Storms (Marcy, NY) and Hilary Lockwood (Victor, NY) each recorded seven kills, with Lockwood adding in three aces as well. Freshman Alison Schroeder (Webster, NY) produced 17 digs and sophomore Davanna Chetney (Fulton, NY) added in 13 digs. Sophomore MacKenzie Cook (Syracuse, NY) was a force up front with five blocks, including four solos. Classmate Jenna Stock (Johnstown, NY) added in 20 assists and 10 digs.
