Knights Skate to Overtime Win Against UMass

October 12, 2007

Dan Tuttle scored 59 seconds into OT to lift CU over UMass 2-1.

Senior captain Nick Dodge (Oakville, ONT) scored a goal for his 100th career point and then set-up the game winner to help lift the Clarkson University Hockey team to a 2-1 overtime victory against UMass in the Golden Knights’ home opener before 2,560 fans at Cheel Arena on Friday night.

Ranked 13th in the nation, Clarkson stands at 1-1 overall and will host Providence on Saturday at 7:00 pm. UMass will play at St. Lawrence on Saturday for its second game of the season.

In a rematch of last year’s NCAA East Regional opening-round game, Clarkson gained a measure of revenge by handing the Minutemen the overtime defeat. Last March, UMass dealt the Knights a 1-0 overtime loss.

Fifty-nine seconds into Friday’s extra session, junior Dan Tuttle (Augusta, ME) took a pass from Dodge at the left circle and fired a quick shot over freshman Paul Dainton’s shoulder to start the Knights’ first celebration of the year. Senior David Cayer (Longueuil, QUE) also assisted, starting the rush on the deciding goal.

A lengthy scoring drought against the Minutemen came to a close for Clarkson early in the third as the Knights tied the game 1-1. Fifty-three seconds into the period, Dodge connected off a pass from classmate Steve Zalewski (New Hartford, NY) with a hard wrist shot from the right circle for his second goal of the season and 42nd career tally. Cayer picked up his first assist of the game on the power-play goal, which snapped a scoreless stretch of 118:43 against UMass.

After a scoreless first period, the Minutemen took the lead at 13:45 of the second when defenseman Justin Braun picked up a loose puck off a block shot in front and fired a low shot from the slot. Cory Quick recorded the assist.

The Knights out shot the Minutemen 33-19. Senior David Leggio (Williamsville, NY) posted 18 stops for the Knights, including nine over the opening 20 minutes. Dainton finished with 31 stops for UMass.

Clarkson was 1-of-5 on the power play and killed off both UMass man-advantage opportunities.
