Clarkson Falls in Overtime at Union

January 20, 2007

The lengthy unbeaten streak for the Clarkson University Hockey team came to end in Schenectady, NY on Saturday night as the Golden Knights fell in overtime to Union, 2-1. Clarkson, ranked 10th in the nation, loses for the first time since mid-November, ending its unbeaten streak at 10 games (8-0-2). The Knights, who own a 14-6-3 overall record and a 6-3-2 ECACHL mark, play at St. Lawrence this Tuesday.

The Dutchmen (11-11-2, 4-8) netted the game-winner 64 seconds into the extra session when the ECACHL’s leading scorer, T.J. Fox connected on a 2-on-1 rush.

Penalty troubles caught up with the Golden Knights in the first period when Union tallied on a 5-on-3 power play with Lane Caffaro scoring on a quick wrist shot from just below the left faceoff dot at 16:00.  Clarkson was whistled for 21 penalty minutes in the opening frame before going on the power play late in the stanza.

Skating with a two-man advantage to start the second, the Knights tied it up as junior defenseman Grant Clitsome (Gloucester, ONT) took a pass out of the corner by classmate David Cayer (Longueuil, QUE) and connected on a shot from the top of the left circle for his fourth goal of the year just 44 seconds into the middle frame. Junior captain Nick Dodge (Oakville, ONT) also assisted.

The Knights had their opportunities to win it in the third, outshooting the Dutchmen 11-6.

Overall, Clarkson held a 33-29 shot advantage. Junior David Leggio (Williamsville, NY) continued his strong play in the Knights' net with a 27-save effort, including 12 stops in the first period.

Both teams went 1-of-6 on the power play
