Potsdam, NY - Senior Stephanie Hansen (Calgary, ALB) continued her strong play since taking over as the starting goaltender for the Clarkson University Women's Hokcey team as the Golden Knights posted their sixth consecutive win with a 5-0 whitewash of Niagara University Friday night in front of 248 fans at Cheel Arena.
The Golden Knights improved to 11-6-2 overall and have not lost since a 2-1 loss to Wayne State on November 17th. Niagara dropped to 4-9-4 on the season. The two teams will face off again at 2:00 pm on Saturday afternoon.
Clarkson took little time to jump on the scoreboard as freshman Britney Selina (Thornhill, ONT) scored her seventh goal of the season when she took a soft slap shot from the right circle that beat Niagara goaltender Allison Rutledge on the glove side at 5:58 of the first.
Clarkson out shot Niagara just 8-5 in the first period with a late burst in the stanza, but picked up its play in the next two period as Niagara stayed put at five shots per period while the Knights picked up 11 in the second and 17 in the third period.
Just 10 seconds into the second frame, freshman Genevieve Lavoie (St. Laurent, QUE) continued her spirited play as of late with her team-high 15th goal of the season. Right off the face off, sophomore Marie-Jo Gaudet (Sherbrooke, QUE) made her way down to the bottom of the right circle and took a shot at a difficult angle, but the rebound found its way to the stick of Lavoie, who tucked the puck in for a 2-0 Clarkson lead.
The Knights remained scoreless for the remainder of the second period, but Clarkson picked up three goals to put the game away in the final period. At the 2:03 mark of the third, senior center Christine Bailkowski (Aurora, ONT) received a pass from behind the net and found herself all alone in front to put the Knights up 3-0, with assists going to Jessica Cloutier (Parker, CO) and Melissa Marshall (Oak Lawn, IL). Six minutes later, Bailkowski tallied her second goal of the game and seventh of the seaosn when the puck found its way from behind the net into the slot where Bailkowski took a soft shot on goal that went through the legs of Rutledge for an unassisted goal. Five minutes later at 13:09 of the third, Lavoie and Gaudet teamed up again for the final score of the contest as Gaudet passed the puck from behind the net to a wide open Lavoie, who shot to the far side of the net for her second goal of the game and 16th of the season. The goal was Lavoie's eighth goal in the past three games.
Hansen made 15 saves for her second shutout of the season, improving to 8-1 in 10 games this year. Rutledge made 25 saves through 53:09 before being replaced by Jill Zelonis after the fifth goal. The freshman goaltender made six saves in her first action of the season.
