It was a humbling trip out to the Midwest for the Clarkson University Hockey team as the Golden Knights dropped a pair of games to 15th-ranked St. Cloud State University. Clarkson lost 7-2 to the Huskies on Saturday before a crowd of 5,957 at the National Hockey Center. On Friday, the Green and Gold lost 4-0 to St. Cloud of the WCHA.
The Golden Knights, who have lost four straight, own a 6-5-1 record heading into next weekend’s games at Cheel Arena against CCHA foes Bowling Green and Miami.
St. Cloud scored two goals late in the first period to start Saturday’s contests and made it 4-0 with a pair of power-play goals early in the second, scoring on the man advantage at 41 seconds and again at 2:16.
Junior captain Nick Dodge (Oakville, ONT) put the Knights on the scoreboard for the first time of the weekend, connecting off assists from junior David Cayer (Longueuil, QUE) and senior Mike Sullivan (Stouffville, ONT) for a power-play tally at 9:27.
Sixty-two seconds later, however, St. Cloud regained the four-goal advantage on Nat Dey’s first goal of the season. The Huskies sandwiched a pair of scores late in the middle frame around sophomore Dan Tuttle’s (Augusta, ME) third goal of the season to complete the five-goal victory.
St. Cloud out shot Clarkson 34-32. Senior Kyle McNulty (Wakefield, RI) made 19 saves on 25 shots through 34 minutes of play. Junior David Leggio (Williamsville, NY) posted eight saves over the final 26 minutes.
The Knights were 1-of-4 on the power play while the Huskies went 3-of-7 with the man advantage.
