A long road trip to the Midwest got off to a rough start for the Clarkson University Hockey team on Friday night in Minnesota as St. Cloud State blanked the Golden Knights 4-0 before 5,701 fans at the National Hockey Center.
Clarkson, which suffered its first road loss of the season, will look to snap out of a three-game losing skid when it faces off against the Huskies again on Saturday at 7:07 CST.
Clarkson owns a 6-4-1 overall record.
After a scoreless first period, St. Cloud got on the scoreboard just 23 seconds into the second, converting on a flurry in front right after the faceoff. The Huskies struck again to start the third, with another strong rush off the period-opening faceoff making it 2-0 just 20 seconds into the final frame. St. Cloud connected for its third goal at 11:02 just four seconds after the Knights had killed off a five-minute major penalty. The Huskies made it 4-0 with an empty-net tally with 15 seconds to play.
Junior goaltender David Leggio (Williamsville, NY) made a season-high 38 saves as Clarkson was out shot 42-24. Junior Shawn Weller (South Glens Falls, NY) had a team-high eight shots for the Green and Gold, including several opportunities in close that were turned aside. The Knights were 0-of-2 on the power play while the Huskies went 0-of-3 with the man advantage, including a five-minute major.
