Potsdam, NY - Playing the final home game of their careers, Jinna Stugart (Schenectady, NY) and Katelyn Wagner (Troy, NY) each scored second half goals to help lift the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team to its first league victory of the season with a 2-0 Liberty League win over Vassar Saturday afternoon at SUNY Potsdam's Turf Field.
The Golden Knights improved to 6-8-2 on the season and 1-5-1 in the Liberty League while the Brewers dropped to 5-6-1 and 1-4-1 in conference. Clarkson closes the regular season next week when it visits Cazenovia College.
With the snow melted off the turf field at Potsdam, the Knights quickened their play compared to Friday's game against Rensselaer, but the offense for both teams was still lacking as both teams combined to take just two shots on goal in the first half. Clarkson, however, owned the better offensive chances in the second half with some aggressive play in the middle and picked up the first score of the contest when senior Jinna Stugart chipped in a shot over Vassar goalkeeper Lisa Strumwasser (Malibu, CA) at 61:31. Freshman Courtney Donovan (South Hero, VT) carried the ball in deep into the corner of the goalie box before sending the cross over to Stugart, who was there to finish off the tally.
The Golden Knights scored an insurance goal exactly 15 minutes later when the team was rewarded with a corner kick. Catie Reed (Lafayette, NY) sent the ball into the penalty area where it was batted around between the two teams before Wagner volleyed a shot in for a 2-0 Clarkson lead. Junior Emily Mahar (Baldwinsville, NY) was given the assist.
Clarkson finished with a 6-4 advantage in shot for the game and the teams were tied 2-2 in corner kick chances. Strumwasser made two saves in goal for Vassar, while Meagan Emlaw (Norfolk, NY) recorded two saves for her fifth shutout of the season.
