October 17, 2006

CU Volleyball Seniors Claire Horvath (18) and Katie Kreilach (8) with coach Johan Dulfer.

Potsdam, NY - Already suffering two losses to crosstown rivals Potsdam State, the Clarkson University Volleyball team sprinted to a three-game sweep over the Bears, 32-30, 30-26, 30-25, on Tuesday night at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights improved to 5-21 on the season and face St. Lawrence University and the University of Scranton in a tri-match this weekend in Canton. Potsdam State, ranked 11th in New York State, fell to 16-11.

The opening game required extra time as the Knights squeaked out a 32-30 victory, but the final two games saw the Bears jump out to early four-point advantages only to see Clarkson come back to tie the score midway through each game and eventually take leads which they would not relinquish.

Sophomore Hilary Lockwood (Victor, NY) recorded 11 kills and 5 aces, pulling the Knights back into the second game with two straight aces. Senior Claire Horvath (South Bend, IN) contributed 8 kills and a team-high 24 digs to go along with 3 aces. Freshman Jenna Stock (Johnstown, NY) collected 30 assists after a slow start and also added 6 kills and 9 digs.

Also leading the Knights were Ashley Delaney (Mayfield, NY), who added 7 kills and 3 solo blocks, Katie Benson (Ashton, MD), who had 17 digs from the back row, and senior Katie Kreilach (West Leyden, NY), who tossed in 3 kills, 3 aces, 4 digs and 2 blocks.
