Freshman Tim Marks’ (Brownville, NY) first collegiate goal enabled the Clarkson University Hockey team to gain a 3-3 tie against UMass at the Mullins Center in Amherst on Saturday night. The Golden Knights, who defeated Providence 6-1 in Rhode Island on Friday, remain unbeaten to start the season with a 3-0-1 record.
Clarkson overcame some sloppy play and received another stellar performance in goal from junior David Leggio (Williamsville, NY) along with a strong penalty-killing effort to rally for the tie.
UMass’ P.J. Fenton took advantage of a Clarkson turnover behind the Knights’ goal and scored in front off a quick shot to put the home team on top 1-0 just 1:39 after the opening faceoff. Junior David Cayer (Longueuil, QUE) evened the score at 5:57 finishing off a feed in front from junior captain Nick Dodge (Oakville, ONT) while on the power play.
Dodge gave the Knights’ their only lead of the game with a power-play marker at 11:03 of the second. Dodge tallied his second goal of the season on a shot off the goal line that deflected in off the back of the UMass goaltender. Cayer and sophomore defenseman Philippe Paquet (Quebec City, QUE) picked up assists.
Just 70 seconds later, however, the Minutemen came right back with their own man-advantage score with Chris Davis connecting to make it 2-2 through 40 minutes of play.
UMass started the third when Cory Quirk picked up a loose puck in the slot after a Clarkson turnover and slipped in an unassisted goal past Leggio at 6:08 for a 3-2 lead.
Marks salvaged the tie for the Green and Gold, scoring at the side of the net at 9:50 after strong work down low with the puck by sophomore’s Chris D’Alvise (Mississauga, ONT) and Shea Guthrie (Carleton Place, ONT).
UMass out shot the Knights 34-31, but Leggio was solid with a 31-save outing. Clarkson was 2-of-6 on the power play and killed off six of the Minutemen’s seven man-advantage opportunities.
Clarkson returns to Cheel Arena this coming weekend hosting Lake Superior State in a two-game series.
