Wagner Goal Ends Clarkson Losing Streak

October 14, 2006

Potsdam, NY - Senior Katelyn Wagner (Troy, NY) blasted a shot from outside the goalie box with only six minutes remaining in regulation to help the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team salvage a 1-1 tie against St. John Fisher College on Saturday afternoon at Clarkson Field.

The Golden Knights moved to 5-7-1, ending a five-game losing streak, while St. John Fisher pushed its record to 7-5-2. Clarkson returns on Sunday to host 19th-ranked Ithaca College.

St. John Fisher took little time to get on the scoreboard as freshman Mary Dougherty (Liverpool, NY) scored her seventh goal of the season when she flicked a shot over Clarkson goalkeeper Megan Emlaw's (Norfolk, NY) head off a cross from sophomore Kiersten Drexler (Ontario, NY) at 8:33.

The Knights controlled play for much of the second half, but seemed unable to break through until the senior tri-captain Wagner took a shot from 25 yards out to knot the game up 1-1 at 83:55. A pair of overtimes couldn't decide the game, despite several solid Clarkson chances in the first extra period.

The Golden Knights out shot St. John Fisher 15-8, including 9-4 after the end of the first half, and held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. Emlaw stopped six shots over 110 minutes for Clarkson while the Cardinals split time with their goalkeepers. Stacey Gable (Derby, NY) started the game for St. John Fisher and made six saves in the opening half. Ashley Martin (Marcellus, NY) played the final 65 minutes for the Cardinals and made five stops.
