SEELEY CAPTURES 100TH WIN AS KNIGHTS DEFEAT CORNELL

January 21, 2006

Potsdam, NY – With a 3-0 win over Cornell, the Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team not only set a new standard for wins in a season with 17, but the Golden Knights helped head coach Rick Seeley capture his 100th career victory Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights improved to 17-7-1 with their third straight ECAC Hockey League win, moving to 9-3-0 in conference play. Cornell dropped to 5-13 overall and 1-11 in conference play. Clarkson will host Rensselaer in a non-league game next Saturday.

Seeley won 54 games at Division III Manhattanville before beginning the Clarkson program three seasons ago. Since his arrival, the Golden Knights have gone 46-36-10 and have gained a national-ranking in the polls.

After a listless first period with only nine shots on goal, the Golden Knights finally got on the scoreboard at the 8:11 mark of the second period. Freshman Sophie Doyon (Victoriaville, QUE) took a shot from the point that deflected out to junior Ashley Shaidle (Hudson, OH) who finished off the play to put the Knights up 1-0. Marie-Jo Gaudet (Sherbrooke, QUE) also earned her third assist of the season on the goal. Just three minutes later, the Knights struck again with a goal from Christine Bailkowski (Aurora, ONT). Cornell goaltender Flora Vineberg couldn’t quite cover up the puck in front after an attempt from Shaidle, who earned her ninth assist on the goal, when Bailkowski came in to put the Knights up 2-0.

Clarkson continued to put forth the effort in the third period as Emma Madigan (Mississauga, ONT) tallied her third goal of the season in front just 25 seconds into the frame. Junior captain Lindsay Williams (Mississauga, ONT) earned her eight assist of the season on the Knights’ insurance goal. Beth Baronick came in to replace Vineberg after Clarkson’s third goal and immediately paid dividends as she made numerous outstanding stops in her first few minutes in goal.

Kira Hurley (Pickering, ONT) played nearly 50 minutes and stopped seven shots through the middle of the third period before being relieved by Jessica Finley (Arvada, CO), who did not have to make a save in the final 10:25 of the game. Flora Vineberg made 12 saves through the first two periods while Baronick came on stopped 16 shots, most of them right in front.

Clarkson finished the game with a 31-7 advantage in shots, including a 17-0 edge in the third period. The Golden Knights went 0-for-6 on the power play while Cornell was scoreless in four chances.
