KNIGHTS RUN TO FIRST PLACE at CCOC

October 29, 2005

Sam Morse
Seniors Sam Morse (Camden, NY) and Kirstin Schillemat (Nelson, NH) both finished first in their respective races to lead the Clarkson University Men’s and Women’s Cross Country teams to first place in the inaugural Cross Country Only Championships (CCOC) on Saturday at the Seneca Lake State Park.

In the 8-kilometer race, Clarkson won both the team and individual titles. Daemen College finished second followed by SUNY Institute of Technology. Potsdam and St. John Fisher also entered runners, but did not field complete teams.

Morse won the race, posting a time of 26:26. The Knights placed runners in five of the top six spots. Senior Ken Crawford (Buffalo, NY) finished third (27:13) followed by senior Dan Ver (Hamburg, NY) in fourth (27:50), freshman Mike Ives (Ogdensburg, NY) in fifth (28:01) and senior Dan Marker (Elmira, NY) in sixth (28:11).

Clarkson University also took both the individual and team titles in the 5-kilometer race. William Smith placed second and Daemen College turned in a third place showing. SUNY Potsdam, St. John Fisher College, and Wells College entered runners, but did not field a complete team.

Schillemat won the individual crown, posting a time of 19:16. Classmate Marianna Worczak (Eden, NY) placed third (19:53). Junior Janine Laskoski (Scotia, NY) and freshman Chelsea Reynolds (Endicott, NY) finished sixth (20:16) and seventh (20:18), respectively. Sophomore Sarah Gardner (Auburn, ME) rounded out Clarkson’s top ten runners in 10th (20:59)

The CCOC is the brainchild of William Smith Cross Country Head Coach Jack Warner. The Herons extended invitations to compete in the inaugural event to every college in New York State that sponsors cross country, but not track and field.

The purpose of the event is to provide those programs a chance to measure themselves against similar programs, instead of competing against student-athletes that are coached all year long from cross country to indoor track to outdoor track.
