Cortland, NY - Sixth-ranked Cortland State relied upon a strong second-half surge to down the visiting Clarkson University Men’s Lacrosse team 11-7 at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex on Wednesday afternoon.
The Red Dragons scored five straight goals spanning the third and fourth quarters to break a 6-6 tie. Cortland held the Golden Knights scoreless for more than a 20-minute stretch. Clarkson had tied the game on a goal by senior Sean Pearce (Auburn, NY) with 5:21 left in the third quarter, but didn't score again until Pearce's extra-man goal with 6.2 seconds left in the game.
Senior Patrick Ryan (Canton, NY) scored three goals for Clarkson, while Pearce finished with two goals and an assist.
Senior Brian Pratt (Randolph, NJ) made 16 saves in the Knights’ goal, including 10 in the second half.
Clarkson took an early 2-0 lead on goals by Ryan and senior Jim Lavelle (Hamburg, NY) in the first 7:19 of the contest. Cortland came back with two goals to tie the game at the end of the first quarter before Ryan gave the Knights the lead again 2:01 into the second quarter.
The Red Dragons tallied the next three goals to hold a 5-3 advantage with 6:32 left in the half. Clarkson scored the next two goals to tie the game with 51.1 seconds left before intermission, but Cortland found the net with 16.3 seconds left for a 6-5 lead after the opening 30 minutes.
After Pearce's tying goal, the Red Dragons took the lead for good on with 4:29 left in the third quarter and pushed their lead to 9-6 after three periods.
Neither team scored for almost 10 minutes in the fourth quarter before Cortland made it 10-6 at the 5:02 mark.
At 2-4, Clarkson is off until next Wednesday, March 31 when it plays at cross-town rival SUNY Potsdam.
