Potsdam, NY – Dan Yacey supplied the defense with a 30-save effort while three different Dartmouth College players scored goals as the Big Green won their first game ever at Cheel Arena by defeating Clarkson University 3-2 before 2,071 fans Saturday night. Dartmouth, which snapped a 12-game winless stretch (0-11-1) in Potsdam, improved its record to 10-7-8 overall and to 8-4-6 in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC). The Golden Knights, who lost their fifth straight game, fall to 11-14-5 overall and to 6-10-2 in the league.
The Big Green jumped out to a 3-0 lead through two periods and then held off a late Clarkson charge to extend their unbeaten streak to three games (1-0-2).
Dartmouth opened the scoring at 16:27 with an unassisted shorthanded goal when Mike Ouellette picked up a loose puck at the Big Green’s blueline after a Clarkson defender fell down and slipped in a breakaway shot past the Knights’ sophomore goaltender Dustin Traylen (Kirkland, QUE) for his 11th goal of the season.
The Big Green added two more goals in the middle frame to hold a 3-0 lead after 40 minutes. Chris Snizek scored during a scramble in front off assists from Sean Offers and Tanner Glass at 8:56 for his second goal of the year. At 17:18, Nathan Szymanski intercepted a Clarkson clearing pass and fired a shot from the left point, which found its way through a screen and past Traylen for his eighth goal on the year.
Clarkson mounted a comeback attempt with two goals in the third. Just 71 seconds into the final stanza, freshman Mike Sullivan (Stouffville, ONT) knocked in a loose puck in the crease for his seventh goal of the season to get the Knights rolling after senior Rob McFeeters’ (Woodville, ONT) shot from in close was stopped by Yacey. Junior Jay Latulippe (Saratoga Springs, NY) also assisted. At 9:08, during a four-on-four situation, Clarkson got to within one when rookie defenseman Michael Grenzy (Lockport, NY) fired a blast from the point for his first collegiate goal to make it 3-2. Freshman Max Kolu (Tuku, Finland) and sophomore Jeff Genovy (Kalamazoo, MI) assisted.
The Knights pulled Traylen for the extra attacker with 1:25 to play, but could not come up with the equalizer. Clarkson out shot Dartmouth 32-29, but struggled on the power play going 0-9. The Big Green was 0-6 with the man-advantage. Traylen finished with 26 saves.
