Lewiston, NY - After dropping the opening game of the weekend, the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team rallied to record their first regular-season victory with a 2-1 win over Niagara University Saturday afternoon at Dwyer Arena.
The Golden Knights, 1-1 overall, got off to a fast start when they scored 10 minutes into the first period. Freshman Ashley Shaidle (Hudson, OH) received a pass from Kate Allgood (Toronto, Onatario) to put Clarkson up 1-0. Shaidle scored an unassisted goal four minutes later to put the Golden Knights up 2-0.
Unlike the previous night, the Golden Knights were able to make the most of their limited opportunities. For the second straight game, Clarkson was out shot, mustering just 17 shots. However, the Golden Knights tallied two scores on Saturday after being shut out on Friday.
Niagara controlled the play in the second period with 14 shots on goal. Candice Moxley cut the Golden Knights lead to one goal when she scored at the 15:31 mark of the second period.
Facing 32 shots, Kira McDonald (Pickering, Ontario) made 31 saves and allowed a single goal by Niagara, earning her first win in net for Clarkson. Jennifer Mascaro stopped 15 shots for Niagara.
The Golden Knights open their home portion of the season when they host the University of Vermont next Saturday and Sunday.
