2002 SEASON WRAP UP
Though the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team, guided by 2nd-year coach Laurel Stewart-Kane, ended the season with a 4-13-1 overall record and a three-game losing streak, the Golden Knights final six games saw them turn a corner, which may lead them to the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association (UCAA) playoffs next season. Starting in a 3-0 loss against Rensselaer, the Golden Knights began to assert themselves offensively and defensively. This newly discovered assertiveness helped the Golden Knights win their first UCAA contest since 1998 when they defeated Vassar 2-1 in overtime at Hantz Field in Potsdam. The Golden Knights followed up that victory with a 7-1 win over Cazenovia. The Knights closed the season with losses at Ithaca, Union and Skidmore, but their final three opponents understand that Clarkson is not far away from participating in post-season tournaments.
The Golden Knights enjoyed a balanced offensive attack that included all four classes. Sophomore Linda Fernandez (Kennebunkport, NY) led the Golden Knights with six goals and 15 points, placing her among the leading scorers in Clarkson's history after just two seasons. Freshman Kim Otto (Canandaigua, NY) also seems likely to join the Clarkson elite after scoring six goals and two assists, totaling 14 points, in her first collegiate season. While Fernandez and Otto were the Knights' leading scorers, several seniors made an impact as well. Sarah Kenney (North Conway, NH) scored four goals and two assists, Laura Tilley (Coram, NY) scored three goals and an assist and Andrea Barberi (Rochester, NY) added two goals and an assist. Sophomore Jennifer Urquhart (Portland, ME) scored a goal and added four assists while freshman Kristin Lorence (South New Berlin, NY) and junior Sara Grimaldi (LeRoy, NY) each scored one goal for the Knights.
Many players enjoyed significant playing time for Clarkson besides those whose names' appear on the stat sheet. Senior Lindsay Suitor (Youngstown, NY) and junior Melanie Kuechle (Williamsville, NY) each saw significant playing time in the midfield along with sophomore Sarah Francis (Seneca Falls, NY), while freshman Jessica Boyd (Knoxville, TN) saw action in a handful of games, earning valuable experience.
The Clarkson defense grew stronger as the year went on thanks in part to several newcomers. Kelly Martin (Wantage, NJ), a three-year starter, was called upon to lead the backs this fall and emerged as a defensive stalwart in her junior campaign. Senior Lindsay Perkins (Lisbon, NY) and sophomores Trisha King (Xenia, OH), and Megan Sanderson (Seneca Falls, NY) provided leadership and excellent play in the back, while freshman Brynn Matkoski (Plattsburgh, NY) started 15 games and classmate Samantha Trudeau (Schenectady, NY) earned an assist in her time on the field.
The Golden Knights' goaltenders were busy during the season, as three netminders combined to make 182 saves in 18 games. Senior Shaina Bellis (Spencerport, NY) played more than half of the minutes for the Golden Knights, winning two decisions and making 93 saves. Freshman Lauren Arredondo (Warwick, NY) came on late in the season to win two games while making 65 saves for a goals against average of 2.08. Sophomore Amber Sweredoski (Constableville, NY) also played 200 minutes in net, gaining experience at the collegiate level.
