KNIGHTS END SEASON WITH HOME WIN OVER ELMIRA
The Clarkson University Women's Soccer team bounced back from yesterday's troubles by downing Elmira 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at Hantz Field.
The Golden Knights got off to a strong start when sophomore Melanie Kuechle (Williamsville, NY) headed a cross from teammate Lindsey Suitor (Youngstown, NY) from the right side at 17:44. Clarkson continued to roll when junior Andrea Barberi (Rochester, NY) picked up her first goal of the season at 27:58. With traffic in front of the net, a defensive miscue by Elmira caused the ball to fall at Barberi's feet for the easy tap in.
Elmira started to challenge the Golden Knights early on in the second frame, but Clarkson battled back to regain momentum. Junior tri-captain Laura Tilley (Coram, NY) had two quality looks at the net, but both shots strayed wide. Freshman Linda Fernandez (Kennebunkport, ME) picked up her sixth goal of the game at 83:49. As Tilley drove down the right side of the field, she fed it to Fernandez, and her shot found the back of the net.
Junior Shaina Bellis (Spencerport, NY) had another strong day in net for the Golden Knights, making 18 saves, including a diving save near the end of the game to preserve the shutout. Clarkson finishes its season 5-10-2, snapping a twelve game winless streak with the victory today.

BOMBERS BEAT OUT KNIGHTS
It took overtime on Friday for the Ithaca Bombers to beat out the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team, as the game's only goal came at the 91:38 mark for a final of 1-0.
An earlier Bomber opportunity was waved off due to offsides, but the next solid Ithaca chance would count. Rachel Thau crossed the ball into the box from the left side, which junior goaltender Shaina Bellis (Spencerport, NY) attempted to grab. However, the ball slipped out of her hands, and Christine Dorney was able to stuff the ball in the net, ending the game.
Bellis had a solid performance in goal, posting 19 saves. The Golden Knight's few opportunities were good ones, as the chances late in the game went wide to force overtime.
The Golden Knights will look to snap their twelve game winless streak when they finish off the season Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. against Elmira.

KNIGHTS COME-FROM-BEHIND FOR FOURTH STRAIGHT VICTORY
Keuka Park, NY - The Clarkson University Women's Soccer team continued its fastest start ever by improving its record to 4-0 with a 2-1 overtime victory at Keuka College on Friday afternoon. With the victory, the Golden Knights have already surpassed last year's win total.
Freshman striker Linda Fernandez (Kennebunkport, ME) scored the game winner just 1:32 into overtime to cap the Golden Knights' comeback. Clarkson's leading scorer with seven points, Fernandez picked up a pass from junior Lindsey Suitor (Youngstown, NY) in the box and scored on a low shot for her second goal of the season. For the first time this season, the Knights had to battle from behind when Keuka's Heidi Rogers scored at 25:45, snapping junior goaltender Shaina Bellis' (Spencerport, NY) shutout streak at 237:33. Suitor set-up the Green and Gold's first goal sending a crossing pass to sophomore Melanie Kuechle (Williamsville, NY), who touched in her second goal of the year at the 75 minute mark to tie the game.
The Storm (1-3) outshot Clarkson 20-11. Bellis finished with a career-high 16 saves. Keuka held a 4-to-1 advantage in corner kicks. Missy Burngasser posted six saves for the Storm.
Clarkson, guided by first-year head coach Laurel Stewart Kane, will look to continue its winning ways when it plays at St. John Fisher in Rochester at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.

KNIGHTS ROLL to WIN OVER POTSDAM for 3-0 START to the SEASON
Potsdam, NY - The Clarkson University Women's Soccer team rolled to its third straight win as the Golden Knights defeated crosstown foe Potsdam 2-0 Tuesday afternoon at Hantz Field giving the Green and Gold their best start ever to open a season.
Both goals for Clarkson came in the first half of play. Freshman Linda Fernandez (Kennebunkport, ME) picked up her second assist of the season when she fed the ball to an unobstructed Melanie Kuechle (Williamsville, NY). It was the sophomore Kuechle's fourth career goal, all of which have come at the hands of Potsdam. The second goal of the game saw Fernandez pick up her second assist of the game and third of the season when she recovered a cornerkick and passed it to junior Laura Tilley (Coram, NY). Tilley's goal was her second of the season. Fernandez currently leads the team in points with five (1-3).
Junior Shaina Bellis (Spencerport, NY) made four saves for the Golden Knights, and posted her second straight shutout of the season and third career shutout. Clarkson is currently on its longest win streak since 1999 (6). Clarkson, guided by first-year head coach Laurel Stewart Kane, will travel to face Keuka at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, September 7th.

KNIGHTS WIN SECOND STRAIGHT WITH SHUTOUT of NORWICH
Potsdam, NY - Junior Sarah Kenney's (North Conway, NH) goal at 45:39 was all the offense the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team would need as the Golden Knights shutout visiting Norwich on Saturday afternoon at Hantz Field. Clarkson opened the 2001 campaign on Friday with a 3-1 victory over visiting Russell Sage.
The match against Norwich saw offensive surges for both teams in the first half, but neither could get on the score sheet. However just 21 seconds into the second frame freshman Linda Fernandez (Kennebunkport, ME) took a shot that deflected off a Norwich defender, and Kenney was able to take the rebound and put it in the net. Junior Shaina Bellis (Spencerport, NY) made 14 saves for the Golden Knights, and posted her second career shutout. Defense was the strong point for Clarkson, as senior captain Christine Dircks (Sudbury, MA) and freshman Sarah Francis (Seneca Falls, NY) put in solid efforts to stop the Cadets.
Clarkson will look to improve upon its 2-0 record when it hosts crosstown foe Potsdam State at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 4th.

KNIGHTS SNAP STREAK WITH WIN
Potsdam, NY - The Clarkson University Women's Soccer team picked up its first season-opening win in ten years as the Golden Knights defeated Russell Sage 3-1 in a non-league game Friday afternoon at Hantz Field in first-year coach Laurel Stewart Kane's debut at Clarkson.
A first half offensive surge by Russell Sage was halted when junior Laura Tilley (Coram, NY) broke onto the score sheet at 30:39 . Sophmore Kelly Martin (Wantage, NJ) sent a cornerkick to Tilley for the first goal. Clarkson wasted little time in picking up its second goal, when a shot by freshman Jennifer Urquhart (Portland, ME) deflected off a Gators defender and into the net at 32:35. Russell Sage ended shutout hopes at 58:12 when Kristen Mirocki (Troy, NY) put a shot into the net off a free kick deflection .
The Golden Knights picked up their third goal of the game when Sarah Kenney (North Conway, NH) passed to a driving Linda Fernandez (Kennebunkport, ME) to seal the victory at 66:22.
Shaina Bellis (Spencerport, NY) made eight saves in the match and allowed one goal for Clarkson, while Jennifer Kelly (East Sandwich, MA) stopped 17 shots and allowed three goals.
Clarkson improves to 11-1-1 all-time against Russell Sage, and its next game is Saturday, September 1st at home against Norwich at 4:00 p.m.

CLARKSON NAMES LAUREL STEWART NEW WOMEN'S SOCCER/LACROSSE COACH
Clarkson University has selected Laurel Stewart as the new head coach for the women's lacrosse and soccer programs for the upcoming year. Stewart just completed a successful season as the head women's soccer coach at Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana. She also served as the assistant coach at the college from 1996-1999 and has served as head women's soccer coach in the Olympic Development Program, selecting and training a team of elite soccer players in Indiana to compete at the regional level.
"Laurel is very knowledgeable about the games of soccer and lacrosse and I am certain she will lead Clarkson's programs in the right direction," said Clarkson Athletic Chairman Geoff Brown. "I am very pleased to have Laurel joining our staff and providing critical leadership for our athletic teams."
Stewart, who attained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Earlham in 1996 and completed a Master of Science at the Brockport State this past summer, played both soccer and lacrosse at Earlham College in the mid-1990's. She was a four-time all-conference player and three-time captain for the soccer team and was a captain her senior year for the lacrosse team.
Stewart was also selected by the YWCA as the Women in Sports Volunteer of the Year in Richmond, IN. Stewart will begin work with the Golden Knights' women's lacrosse team this spring.
2000 CLARKSON SEASON ReCAP
Appointed just one month before the start of the season, first-year head coach Kelly Norman was barely familiar with the Clarkson University Women’s Soccer team, but the Knights accomplishments under Norman were numerous when considering the situation in which the team was placed.
Though the Golden Knights finished with a 3-15 overall record, which included tough competition in the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association (UCAA), Clarkson’s youth could turn many of those losses into wins next season with additional experience. With just two seniors on the roster, the Golden Knights lost four games in overtime and dropped two other close games late in the second half.
Clarkson started the season with a 2-1 overtime loss to Norwich but rebounded with a 3-0 win versus cross-town rival Potsdam State. In that game, freshman Melanie Kuechle (Williamsville, NY) became just the second Clarkson freshman to score three goals in a game. Kuechle was named UCAA Rookie of the Week on September 11th for her dominating performance. Also winning the UCAA Goalkeeper of the Week was sophomore Shaina Bellis (Spencerport, NY). Bellis started six games during the season, but won two games for the Knights and recorded her first career shutout.
After recording a win at Potsdam, the Knights also picked up victories at Hantz Field against St. John Fisher and Cazenovia. The Knights defeated Fisher 2-1 in overtime on September 9th and buried Cazenovia 6-0 on October 10th, the highest goal output of the season for Clarkson.
Clarkson’s youth this fall could serve them well in future seasons as the Knights’ top 11 scorers this season were all underclassmen. Along with Kuechle, freshman Kelly Martin (Wantage, NJ) led the team with three goals and seven points. Sophomores Sarah Kenney (North Conway, NH) and Ashley Mosher (Harrisville, NY) each added two goals and five points while junior tri-captain Christine Dircks (Sudbury, MA) added a goal and three assists for five points. Also contributing to the Knights’ offense were sophomores Laura Tilley (Coram, NY), Kira Wilson (Fulton, NY), and Andrea Barberi (Rochester, NY) as well as freshmen Sarah Grimaldi (LeRoy, NY) and Deanna St. Onge (Greene, ME).
Contributing on defense along with Dircks were senior tri-captain Danielle Zimmer (Kenmore, NY), sophomores Lindsey Suitor (Youngstown, NY) and Amanda Cave (Ontario, NY) as well as freshmen Lindsey Perkins (Lisbon, NY) and Amy Castranova (Webster, NY). Sharing goaltending duties with Bellis was senior Jen Bashant (Tupper Lake) who added another shutout to her Clarkson career-record of 14.5. Bashant started 12 games and recorded 144 saves placing her second all-time at Clarkson. She also tied the Clarkson record for most career wins as goalkeeper, winning her 18th career game against Cazenovia.
