GOLDEN KNIGHTS 2002-03 SEASON WRAP UP
Unfavorable circumstances surrounded the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team from time to time during the 2002-03 season. With just a little bit of fortune, the Golden Knights could have turned their 12-13 overall record into a 17-8 mark, having lost five games by three points or less, including three on last-second shots. Despite the heroics of other teams, the Golden Knights, guided by first-year head coach Ann Parks and assistant Art Siebert, enjoyed a season that will go down as one of the most remarkable seasons in Clarkson history.
The Golden Knights started the season with a 4-0 record, their best start since the 1989-90 campaign, with wins over Medaille, Hilbert, Plattsburgh and Middlebury. With a tournament championship at the start of 2003 in Baltimore, Clarkson improved to 6-1, but a streak of bad luck hit the Knights as they lost seven of their next nine games, including six single-digit defeats. The Golden Knights finished outside of the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Conference (UCAA) post-season tournament with a 5-9 record.
Senior co-captain Linda Bondellio (Watertown, NY) made her final season at Clarkson a memorable one, finishing with 449 points and an average of 18.0 per game, the highest single-season average in Golden Knights' history. Bondellio came within just 14 points of Melissa Smith's career record of 1,578 points and broke several career marks at Clarkson. Bondellio ended her career with 900 rebounds and 388 free throws made and also set a single-season mark for free throws made (121). Bondellio's 18.0 points per game ranked second in the UCAA while her 10.2 rebounds per contest was the high-mark in the conference. She also made 44 3-pointers, the most in the UCAA. Her performance during the season helped her gain UCAA First-Team All-Star accolades along with four UCAA Forward of the Week honors.
Senior co-captain Jen Martin (Guildhall, VT) may not have put up the numbers that Bondellio did, but her early-season contributions helped the Golden Knights to their strong start. Martin scored 29 in a win over Middlebury to help push Clarkson to 4-0 and then surpassed that performance with a Clarkson single-game record of 34 points against Cazenovia, which would later be tied by Bondellio against William Smith. Martin was among the leaders in the NCAA in free throw percentage throughout most of the season, hitting a high mark of 88.6 percent midway through the year, finishing with a 82.6 percentage which ranked first in the UCAA. She also tied a Clarkson mark with 24 consecutive free throws made. Martin averaged 14.3 points and 8.4 rebounds per contest, both ranking in the top six in the UCAA, and came within 20 points of reaching 1,000 in her career as a Golden Knight. She also finished first in the UCAA in offensive rebound (3.48 per game) and fifth in blocks (25). Martin was named UCAA Forward of the Week and ECAC Co-Player of the Week for the week ending January 13, 2003.
Senior Natalie Muren (Hempstead, NY) put forth a significant effort in her only season at Clarkson, providing valuable minutes off the bench. Muren scored 4.9 points per game and averaged 3.6 rebounds, 1.8 steals and 1.5 assists per game despite playing just 18 minutes per game. Also helping out in the frontcourt were Sarah Guest (Middleburgh, NY), Michelle Pelkey (Schuylerville, NY) and Theresa Creten (Hadley, NY) who combined to play 40 games.
Junior Bridget Sweeney (Corning, NY) took another step forward this year for the Golden Knights, starting 25 games and averaging 8.0 points per game, reaching double-digits in 12 contests. She also finished seventh in the UCAA in 3-point field goals made with 32. Sophomore Linda Fernandez (Kennebunkport, ME) continued to show promise at point guard, dishing out 97 assists at a clip of 3.9 per game, the second best mark in the conference. Fernandez is already among the top playmakers in the Clarkson history and needs just 11 more assists to become only the seventh Golden Knights' player to reach 200 in her career.
Also helping out in the backcourt this season was freshman Erika Fritjofson (East Barre, VT), who became the first Clarkson freshman to start every game in a season since the 1996-97 season. Fritjofson averaged 4.5 points per contest. In addition to Fritjofson, Ashley Janisewski (Chateaugay, NY) and Jamie Folsom (Alexandria Bay, NY) provided quality minutes for the Knights. Folsom made the most of her minutes this season, scoring 11 points in 23 minutes this season.
